Two years ago, we hosted our first portfolio trip, inviting our portfolio companies to join us in exploring Iceland. It was a great success, and last week we had the opportunity to do it again. Last time, we explored Hvalfjörður and Hvammsvík, but this time we decided to venture into Kerlingarfjöll in the Icelandic highlands. We were joined by a wonderful and diverse group of founders representing various sectors, including healthtech, fintech, gaming, and sustainability, along with a lovely group of investors. Our first stop was the iconic Geysir, where we marveled at the geothermal wonders (in surprisingly nice weather) before enjoying a delightful lunch and an insightful workshop with the talented Maria Ellingsen. Maria drew on her performance background to deliver useful lessons on how to speak and carry yourself, with the key lesson that vulnerability helps us connect with each other. We then headed into the highlands. Despite being late May, the road was impassable for regular vehicles, but thanks to a robust super jeep provided by Mountaineers of Iceland, we cruised along. Along the way, we paused to soak in the breathtaking, moon-like scenery and savor some traditional dried fish with butter, with a shot of brennivín for the adventurous. As we continued our journey, spirits remained high with Aron Jóhannsson cleverly prepared "bus quiz," featuring 24 intriguing questions that kept everyone engaged and entertained. Upon arrival in Kerlingarfjöll - Highland Base we were greeted with a feast of Icelandic waffles, the perfect fuel before hiking up Ásgardsfjall, where we were treated to a panoramic view of the area and an old Icelandic folk song from Hekla. The day concluded with a relaxing soak in hot tubs amidst the beautiful spring weather. Dinner was a themed affair, "fancy cowboy," with costumes so impressive that selecting winners was a challenge. The night ended with joyous dancing and some late-night hot tub relaxation – a true Icelandic experience. The next morning began with an invigorating yoga class (for the early birds) led by Ingunn Eiriksdottir, followed by a hike to the stunning Hveradalir. Despite the less-than-ideal weather and low visibility, morale was high, and everyone appreciated the authentic Icelandic conditions. Returning to base, we gathered for another enriching workshop with María Ellingsen focusing on enhancing our public speaking skills and presentations through deep, collaborative exercises. After a delicious lunch, we embarked on our journey back to Reykjavik, stopping to admire the majestic Gullfoss waterfall. This trip left us deeply grateful for the opportunity to bond, learn, and explore together. Here's to many more adventures with the Crowberry team!
