Putting Personal Disputes Ahead of What’s Best for the Organization. Ref: https://lnkd.in/e8KHcYTf I came across a video 2013 presentation by Steve Knott, Army War College, discussing the Battle of Gettysburg, and the human dynamics behind J.E.B. Stewart's fateful ride around the Union Army. I would appreciate your comments on the following Steve Knott quote: “It's human nature; people will put interpersonal, frictions, tensions, rivalries ahead of what’s best for the organization. I don’t care if you work for IBM, the US Army, or the Confederate Army; people will do that. Nine times out of ten, they will put their own personal disputes ahead of what’s best for the organization. It’s something, as a senior leader, you always must be on guard to watch out for.” 1. Do you agree with Knott's observation? 2. How do you try to ensure that the good of the organization is placed ahead of the personal disputes of your subordinates?

Reflecting on the story of Rich Fierro and his incredible act of bravery, I can't help but feel a deep, personal connection. This isn't just about recognizing a hero; it's about understanding the profound, often overlooked realities of what it means to be thrust into the role of a savior, especially when society's perception of heroism doesn't align with the internal turmoil and ongoing battles that heroes like Rich endure. When Rich bravely stood up during a moment of terror, he did more than just protect those around him; he became a symbol of courage and an ally in the fight against hate. Yet, the hero's journey is fraught with paradoxes. Society celebrates their bravery with awards and public acclaim, yet fails to see the scars left behind, the mental toll of the event, and the weight of actions taken in moments of crisis. The spotlight shines bright, but it rarely illuminates the darker, more complex layers of their experience. This narrative hits close to home for me. The public accolades, the moments of being heralded as a champion for change or bravery, can feel unsettling when they don't capture the full spectrum of the experience. Like Rich, many of us don't feel like the heroes society makes us out to be. We're left pondering the what-ifs, the faces and names of those we couldn't save, and the ongoing struggles that don't make the headlines. The battle doesn't end when the cameras turn off; for many, it's just the beginning of a longer, more personal fight. The truth is, acknowledging someone's heroism isn't just about celebrating the moment of bravery; it's about recognizing the ongoing battles they face long after the event has passed. It's about understanding that behind every act of heroism is a human being grappling with their own vulnerabilities, doubts, and the haunting question of whether they could have done more. In sharing Rich Fierro's story, I see a reflection of the broader struggles many of us face when confronted with our own moments of crisis. It's a reminder that heroism isn't about the absence of fear or doubt but about the courage to act despite them. And perhaps, most importantly, it's a call to support each other not just in moments of crisis but in the challenging journey that follows.

This Veterans Day, I invite you to check out "Caste: The Origins of Our Discontents" by Isabel Wilkerson. One of the most egalitarian tenets of the military is its rank-based hierarchy. We aspire to be a true meritocracy, agnostic of race, ethnicity, or gender—and for the most part that is true. But I did not know about the blatant racism during WWII where black Soldiers were marginalized by their white American peers while foreign counterparts (the French!) treated them as equals. Then these black service members were denied U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs benefits introduced by the 1944 GI Bill. Black veterans were not aided in adjusting back to civilian life—no VA home loans, no college education. This further exacerbated inequality with lost generational wealth opportunities. But not everyone took the snub from Uncle Sam as his fate. My neighbor served in WWII. He was in the US Army Signal Corps and climbed towers to catch enemy transmissions. As a former US Navy Signals Intelligence Officer myself, I knew exactly how critical his work was to saving our troops. I was saddened to hear that he threw away his medals in frustration. He channeled that anger into building his family estate, amassing wealth through purchasing and rehabilitating distressed properties. His daughter is now taking care of him as he approaches 98.
