Day 4: Workplace Culture #ConstructionInclusionWeek "Establishing and maintaining a positive workplace culture means that everyone gets to experience a workplace that is inclusive and respectful. We also know that a good culture leads to increased safety and more productivity, providing higher value to our clients and allowing each and every worker to perform their best work. Everyone must actively care for each other and ensure that everyone feels both physically and psychologically safe. Our work homes are where we spend our days, and they are where we gather the emotions, attitudes, and behaviors that we bring home to our families. We should expect to get a high level of respect and standard of care where we work. We must create workplaces which are equitable and meet the needs of all employees, industry-wide. We need to ensure workplaces are free of bias and harassment; where all are treated with respect; sites where our professional opinions are heard and valued and all have a seat at the table. Additionally, our clients appreciate and have come to expect a diverse and respectful workplace. This is not diversity on paper only, we need to foster collaborative and inclusive teams where everyone can do their best work and deliver for our clients. Simply said: When it comes to workplace culture, it has to be practiced and lived daily. Everyone has to be about it and not just talk about it." “Man, the man is non-stop!” Lin-Manuel Miranda Who is a leader that inspires you and what have you learned from them? I’ll confess that I have a go-to answer. I’ll offer Shannon Byrne Susko when asked and share two abbreviated lessons from early in my career: 1. Take responsibility. 2. Get comfortable with being uncomfortable. Lately, I’m asking “what am I learning about myself?” And “who inspires me today?” AMIR NEZHAT comes to mind. Watching Amir in action is a masterclass in building connections, community, and creating shared value. Amir has a talent for bringing people with common purpose together for meaningful collaboration. His energy is contagious, and, like Lin-Manuel’s Hamilton, he is non-stop! What am I learning? Amir reminds me that relationships should be regenerative and that community matters. My crew is the glass half full team. I have a talent for seeing the potential in others, and a firm belief in strengths-based development. I’m learning that cultivating talent is just the starting point. The exponential impact is in the connections. Community matters.

In group situations, it can feel easier to be silent, agree, and even acquiesce for the sake of time or a group push to move on. Thinking about psychological safety and the four components, according to Edmonson *Learner *Collaborator *Challenger *Inclusion Safety None exists if one cannot disagree with something within a group. The level of learning a team must do to achieve psychological safety requires intentionality and hard work. But when achieved, it is beautiful & transformational to any organization- Dr. Fabiola Bagula, Deputy Superintendent San Diego Unified School District.
