Last Saturday, our founder Gordon Miller embarked on an incredible journey, participating in the Chase The Sun Cycle, riding coast to coast. Every pedal stroke of this grueling 310-kilometre ride, completed in just 14 hours, was dedicated to raising awareness of modern slavery and supporting Ride For Freedom. What an amazing display of mental and physical strength! Now, we’re inviting YOU to join the #CycleRevolution and make a difference. Since joining Prosperity 24/7, I've come to realise that there's not much that brings us together like a good Love to Ride challenge. We managed to top our respective leaderboards in the recent May challenge, although Greener Kirkcaldy gave us an excellent run for our money. We got new people involved in the challenge, we saved an estimated 546lb CO2 through cycling instead of driving and as well as cheering on our usual stalwarts, I also discovered which colleagues will come through last thing on a Friday and undertake a round-the-island-cycle for the extra miles... Sure, winning is fun but what's really nice is to see the behaviour changes starting to take root in the segment of our company that aren't die-hard cyclists (and I include myself in that). Last September I noted that I'm a reluctant cyclist but I'm becoming less reluctant and more willing to do that commute by bicycle. I've also noticed our bike store becoming busier and less frequent cyclists populating the Love to Ride feed more often. That's no mean feat. As someone who deals with change while delivering projects, change isn't always easy to embed but I've always been a fan of gamification as motivation in the right settings. And one of those right settings will be Prosperity Day in September, when our colleagues and clients will compete for bragging rights but also for the much better reason of raising money for charity - this year, we're supporting Healing Waves UK and Jersey Hospice Care - two very deserving charities. This picture is from a ride I did a few weeks ago, and I think it relates very much to my charity project... 👇 "Opportunities don't happen, you create them" As you might know, I am carrying out, all through this year, a very special project: #505. To celebrate my 50th birthday (which was a few weeks ago), I am taking on 5 epic cycling challenges in hopes of raising £5,000 for The William Wates Memorial Trust. WWMT supports around 20-25 charity projects focused on helping young people in really tough situations. Right now there are 21 different charities under their umbrella doing incredible work across the UK, with activities that range from education, arts, work skills and sports. You can see the full list on their website: https://buff.ly/3UnMqZB These charities provide crucial resources, support, and opportunities for kids and teens facing major challenges like poverty, homelessness, abuse, and more. A harsh reality that no one should ever face, but that we can help to change. Having raised funds and volunteered with WWMT before, I can confirm that the impact of their work is immeasurable and deeply inspiring. And, by chipping in whatever you can to my fundraiser, you'll be helping WWMT keep these lifelines up and running. Opportunities don't happen, we create them. I'm taking a quick trip up to Sydney this weekend to get immersed in arguably the world's most iconic fun run. Why would I do that, you ask? I'm running for Foundation for Alcohol Research and Education (FARE), Australia's leading not-for-profit striving towards an Australia free from alcohol harms: https://lnkd.in/ejgiHKDp It also happens to be a pretty remarkable, purpose-driven workplace. I would know, I work there. In my (relatively) short time at FARE, I've come to understand how insidious the profit-driven alcohol industry can be in driving rates of alcohol-related injury, illness, violence and other harms in our communities. Every day, companies relentlessly target people who are attempting to recover from an alcohol dependency by serving them up ads to buy more alcohol. The alcohol industry uses front organisations to make it look as if they part of meaningful change. But behind the scenes, lobbyists donate political gifts and actively block reforms to decades-old alcohol laws that would bring them up to speed with the digital age. And companies use complex data-driven advertising practices to bombard school-aged kids with products that are clearly designed to appeal to them. There are many more harms, just like these, that the industry perpetrates. All of that doesn't sit right with me, particularly as someone who sees health and wellbeing as a core part of my life. Something needs to change. For that to happen, we must have an open conversation about alcohol's role in our lives, one that is free of stigma and shame. A conversation about how alcohol is historically - and harmfully - interwoven into notions of Australian culture and masculinity. A conversation about how alcohol has become an inescapable part of sporting events and our time spent online. A conversation about how alcohol is the leading risk factor for disease for men aged 15-44, responsible for 40% of Australia's liver cancer burden and 25% of road traffic injuries. That's a conversation FARE fosters, every single day, through our Voices of Change project. It gives people with a first-hand experience of alcohol harms a platform to tell their story, counter the narratives spun by the alcohol industry, and advocate for the change our community so desperately needs.
