While the General is not wrong, there is more context to consider. At Camp Lejeune in 2015, I was in 2DLAR, and was moved from C Company to the S-2 shop to prepare me for separation from the USMC. I worked with a former MARSOC SSgt. and we ran Facilities for a few months. Now, I'm not a mycologist, but I was tasked with eliminating mold in a barracks. The scenario: A company of Marines was deployed on a MEU, and the air conditioning in their barracks went out. This was summer in North Carolina, so it was a big problem. We had to assemble a group of 20+ Marines to clean each room by scrubbing the floors, walls, inside cabinets, under beds, and throw out all of the bedding. Could this have been prevented? Possibly. Better leadership and initiative could have presented a scenario in which the barracks of deployed Marines were checked more than once a week. At the same time, I cleaned mold almost daily in my own rooms I lived in across my time in the Corps. It was a constant fight. After even just a 5-10 field opp, the mold gets a good foothold. The real issue though? Dilapidated, old, and broken barracks that have been left to crumble as the military points its procurement dollars to other uses. Retention requires good housing. Recruiting requires good housing. Good order and discipline, and pride, require good housing. Don't believe me? Ask your soldiers. [Update: This program is scheduled for the anniversary of the first Decoration Day at Andersonville in 1869. This event was a protest of Confederate Decoration Day and involved African American children decorating the graves of the prisoners (and the guards) before daylight on April 27--a massive "preemptive" decoration of ~13,200 graves.] I am saddened-but-not-shocked to see this program scheduled for the weekend of so-called Confederate Memorial Day at Andersonville National Historic Site. I'm reminded of the saying, "don't attribute to malice that which is adequately explained by ignorance." Andersonville NHS suffers from consistent staffing problems. They cannot seem to recruit or retain interpretive staff who are up to the task of managing the place where 13,000 U.S. soldiers perished--slowly, by inches--for want of adequate shelter, wholesome food, and clean water. This has been a problem for years. What's sad isn't that it's offensive, it's that the people putting it on might not know why it should be offensive. I can't imagine Manzanar National Historic Site inviting the public to learn how to march like the Army Military Police guarding the internment camp or a generic "World War II soldier." I'd be surprised if Sand Creek National Monument brought kids in to drill like Colorado militiamen. I doubt anyone would rebuild HMS Jersey, where Americans were imprisoned during the Revolutionary War, so that kids could learn about life as a British sailor. And here the U.S. government encourages children to dress up as guards at the deadliest Confederate prison. In recent decades, historic sites have been under great scrutiny to improve their educational programing. Many of these sites have risen to the challenge of telling difficult histories. The National Park Service could do a better job than they're currently doing here. This is a travesty.

In the past four months since taking the helm at Patriot Services Group (PSG), we’ve made significant strides in transforming our approach to business. Typically, companies set normal expectations, yet often overpromise and underdeliver. Through this transition, I've recognized that an overly bureaucratic structure can stifle efficiency and disconnect a company from the needs of its clients. To address this, we've shifted to direct management of our assets in Illinois and Kentucky, following a successful model we implemented in West Virginia. Just one month into self-management there, we achieved the highest monthly collections in the asset’s history. I am eagerly anticipating similar successes in Mississippi and Louisiana, and I'm optimistic about what June will bring for Kentucky and Illinois. Over these months, PSG has strategically partnered with local businesses rather than large corporations, which is a common choice among corporate managers. This not only supports our community but also aligns with our commitment to creating local jobs, developing programs for nonprofit communities, and continuing our core mission of supporting homeless veterans. Looking ahead, we are excited about upcoming initiatives, including a rebranding effort, the standardization of processes, and the launch of new housing programs tailored to our mission. Additionally, we are planning to expand our assets into new states soon. As a 4-H alumni I can attest that 4-H prepares you for life! 4-H was a great experience. I have pulled an excerpt from the opinion article attached. Raising hogs, spending all summer working with them, and then selling them was difficult for most 4-H'ers...I was a kid who cried the day after the sale. You understood where they were going and you had a bond with that animal because of the hard work and time spent. You also knew that you were putting a quality protein on someone's table. Older club members would come over and give you a hug, tell you it's okay...then as you got older, it was your turn to console your friends...these are some of the skills that 4-H teaches you without realizing you are being taught... Empathy, compassion, kindness. I agree with the author...a 4-H'er is who I want when things are tough. ...And more than disappointment: In 4-H, you learn about death. While I was studying how to poultice hoofs and identify tack, my peers in other clubs were raising animals for more utilitarian purposes. Immaculate plush-coated steers, inquisitive pigs, enormous complacent turkeys were raised from birth to be judged at the fair and then sold to the highest bidder for consumption. We’d often see tears during the final separation; 4-H’ers are children — not monsters ―many of whom put their sale earnings toward college tuition. But still, lesson learned. It takes a certain type of kid to send a creature they fed with a bottle or saw hatched from an egg to someone’s dinner table.
