This really puts it all in to context. The NHS can’t cope with the level of demand it’s facing and it needs more doctors and nurses. The long term staffing plan aims to increase the workforce by 1m healthcare workers over the next 15 years but the NHS can’t wait that long and risk spiralling further. International recruitment is the only way to recruit quickly, at scale and without the cost of locums 💙

“My emergency department used to have around 115 patients on the screen at a time on a bad day. This is now a good day and we’ve been known to have 300 patients at a time.” We hear stories like this daily - this one came from a Florence nurse in our General Election survey. From that same survey, 80% of Florence nurses and carers said they will definitely or probably vote on July 4th. ➡️ 46% plan to vote Labour vs 12% Conservative ➡️ 40% say conditions have got worse with current leadership ➡️ 68% support a ‘National Care Service’ for social care staff NHS & care staff say they need: 1️⃣ Better pay and working conditions 2️⃣ More funding for the NHS and social care 3️⃣ More training and development opportunities The results spell it out: healthcare is in crisis, and staff are stretched to breaking point. Since the COVID-19 pandemic, fewer patients have been admitted for treatment in NHS hospitals. However, those admitted are spending longer in hospital. This has contributed to record waits for elective treatments and emergency care and raised concerns about NHS hospital productivity. This report from The Health Foundation seeks to gain a better understanding of what has driven increased lengths of stays. This could help inform long-term resource and capacity planning as the NHS seeks to address its productivity challenge. The NHS received widespread applause and support as a gesture of gratitude from the public during the early months of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. Known as the ‘Clap for Our Carers’ campaign, this was a way for people to express appreciation for the dedicated efforts of healthcare workers, including doctors, nurses, paramedics, and support staff, who were working tirelessly on the frontlines to care for those affected by the virus. Whilst the clapping initiative garnered widespread support, discussions need to take place regarding the need for tangible support for healthcare systems, including adequate funding, resources, and policies to address the long-term challenges which the NHS is currently facing (see our previous post for more information) The ‘Clap for Our Carers’ campaign was not unique to the UK, as similar gestures of appreciation occurred in various countries around the world to honour healthcare workers during the global response to the COVID-19 pandemic. What are your thoughts on the initial campaign and the current NHS? #clap #clapforcarers #clapfornhs #covid #nhs #walkthetalkspeechandlanguagetherapy #slt

Hospitals are preparing to cut spending on doctors and nurses by hundreds of millions of pounds after being ordered to plug a £4.5bn hole in the NHS budget. Chief executives at hospitals, mental health trusts and community services in England have been ordered to review staffing levels and draw up plans to close some services and merge others. They are also looking at banning or restricting the use of some agency workers. NHS bosses have been alerted in recent days to the scale of the cuts needed after negotiating financial plans for next year. The health service in England has a budget of £165bn for the 2024-25 financial year, which starts next week. The budget rose by 3.2% in real terms between 2018-19 and 2023-24
