Fantastic to be at the opening of the Sustainable Skies Summit #ssws24 with a fantastic opening introduction by Jonathon Counsell, CSO of International Airlines Group (IAG). So what’s been going on since I last attended? 1. Policy - the European Green Deal promoting SAF and the DfT’s announcement of its SAF mandate and associated Revenue Certainty Mechanism 2. New technologies - decarbonisation 3. Hydrogen powered aircraft - for example Rolls-Royce with partners easyJet as well and Airbus’ ZEROe programme, ZeroAvia and Cranfield Aerospace Solutions’ Project Fresson all pushing development forward 4. Launch of the Defence Aviation Net Zero Strategy 5. International Air Transport Association (IATA)’s first World Sustainability Symposium 6. Successful first 100% transatlantic SAF flight 7. The Third International Civil Aviation Organization Conference on Aviation Fuel 8. LanzaJet’s opening of the first alcohol to SAF plant in the US with a second, larger one in Europe this year 9. How does Aviation, a hard to abate sector use other solutions such as Carbon Capture and Sequestration? 10. IAG’s partnership with Twelve with a commitment to a significant take or pay agreement for eSAF Aviation Decarbonisation needs all of the above, and much more, with collaboration being key. There is a divide opening up, between Europe and the U.S, when it comes to their approach to future Aviation fuels. Airbus especially, are pushing for more infrastructure-commitments for Hydrogen whilst the Americans are looking closer at the possibilities with Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF). Which one of these technologies will win in the end (if any of them) is still a big question. But if the industry is going to have any chance of reaching ”Net Zero” carbon emissions, by the year 2050, well then we REALLY need to see some movements soon. https://lnkd.in/eH3gih5t

Europe needs to move quicker to decarbonise aviation, according to several expert speakers at a recent workshop co-organised by the European Commission DG RTD and the Clean Aviation JU in cooperation with the European Committee of the Regions. The time required for the development, testing and certification of commercial aircraft technology means the technologies that Europe will need to achieve its 2050 climate neutrality objectives should already be in the works and effectively need to hit the market by 2035. With a €4.1 billion budget, Clean Aviation aims to amplify its impact emphasizing the urgent need for unified efforts and strategic resource allocation across regional, national, and European levels.
