Looks like I am helping train Grok, Elon Musk's new AI Chatbot.
To see what the application experience was like, I just applied to be an AI Tutor for X -- a fully remote job with a thin job description and no salary range. https://x.ai/career/ ("We are hiring creators, teachers, and curators to help improve our models! Elon Musk has spoken at length about how remote work is an immoral and unfair expectation of the "laptop class." https://lnkd.in/egTRud99
But he also says exceptions are ok.
This must be an exception.
The application process is very easy -- just upload your cover letter, resume, examples of exceptional writing, and LinkedIn profile.
Job applicants for the Remote AI Tutor role are managed by a third party: Greenhouse.
The Greenhouse Privacy Policy notes that X controls the data you submit as an applicant: Greenhouse "merely processes candidate data on behalf of our customer companies. As such, we cannot delete or alter candidate profiles unless we do so at the explicit instruction of those customers, who are the data controllers."
To understand where this data will go, I looked to X privacy policies.
X's Privacy Policy effective 9/29/23 say X may use data to train its LLM and AI: "We may use the information we collect and publicly available information to help train our machine learning or artificial intelligence models for the purposes outlined in this policy." https://lnkd.in/eJ6YWdxm
So, the data in my application may be used to train Grok, yes.
Is this our future? Employers get many candidates to cull through and also keep a lot of data to improve machine learning.
Our data, even if anonymized, is used to train the next generation of LLM that will be sold back to us and our children.
Looking for a job is hard and many people pour their hearts and certainly their time into cover letters. I wonder how many people will apply for this role. Likely many thousands. Many more: Elon Musk tweeted out the job to over a hundred million people.
Seems X wins here, and I can't tell if we lose.
