Here's an important step in the hiring process that will reveal a lot about your sales candidate: If you're close to making a hiring decision on a salesperson, take them out for lunch or dinner. Then, watch how they treat the wait staff, including the busboy. Everyone knows A-level players in the workplace. Halfway through this post, you'll be thinking of names in your head: "Yes that coworker, he/she is an A-level player." You can teach people product. You cannot teach people hunger and discipline. Heck I could get a parrot to recite data about the efficiency of this and the efficacy of that. Bird food is cheap, and the parrot could fly from prospect to prospect thereby saving the employer money on things like company cars and mileage reimbursement. If I am hiring sales reps, I would not be looking for someone who knows my product, although it is a plus if they do.
