NYSERDA has just release a very thorough #FAQ document on the interaction between whales and the offshore wind industry. While US-focused, this is by far the best lay description I have seen of the research community's understanding of impacts and the mitigation options available. #renewableenergy #offshorewind #whales #biodiversity #mitigation https://lnkd.in/evMASJwR

The Dutch government is taking great steps to advance its renewable energy goals by dividing its upcoming offshore wind tender into four separate 1 GW sites. This strategic move is designed to enhance competition and accelerate the development of offshore wind capacity in the Netherlands. 🌍 By splitting the tender into smaller, more manageable projects, the government aims to attract a broader range of developers and ensure a more efficient and diversified expansion of offshore wind energy. This approach not only supports the nation's ambitious energy transition targets but also reinforces its commitment to sustainability and innovation in the renewable energy sector. #OffshoreWind #RenewableEnergy #Sustainability #EnergyTransition #Innovation #Netherlands Article: https://lnkd.in/dMMjAYBF

𝗨𝗦 𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝗠𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗳𝗶𝗿𝘀𝘁 𝗳𝗹𝗼𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗼𝗳𝗳𝘀𝗵𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝘄𝗶𝗻𝗱 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗲 The US State of Maine and the Federal Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) have agreed on a #floatingoffshorewind research lease in the Gulf of Maine, which could allow for the deployment of twelve #floatingwind turbines capable of generating 144 MW. The research lease site, an area of up to 15 square miles in federal waters nearly 30 miles southeast of Portland, will host the country’s first floating #offshorewind research array, according to the office of Governor Janet Mills. The research array is said to allow the state, the #fishing community, #wildlife experts, the offshore #windindustry, and others to conduct in-depth studies and evaluate #floatingoffshore wind as a #renewableenergy source in the Gulf of Maine region. Big news from Bureau of Ocean Energy Management today. Informed by eight #environmentaljustice forums over two years, five public meetings, and more than 1500 public comments, BOEM announced the completion of its first regional Final Programmatic Environmental Impact Statement (PEIS), which assesses the potential biological, socioeconomic, physical, and cultural impacts that could result from development activities in six commercial #offshorewind energy lease areas in the New York Bight offshore New York and New Jersey. BOEM prepared the PEIS to analyze avoidance, minimization, and mitigation measures (AMMMs) and to focus future project-specific environmental analyses to inform future AMMMs that may be required as a condition of approval for activities proposed in #offshorewind lessees' Construction and Operations Plans (COPs) . According to BOEM, the Final PEIS will facilitate the timely review of COPs; it will not impose these AMMMs absent evaluation of COP-specific environmental impacts. The Final PEIS will be published October 25th in the Federal Register and can be found here. https://lnkd.in/e-seHUfq.
JUST ANNOUNCED | We have completed our regional environmental review of the potential development of six wind lease areas offshore New York and New Jersey, in an area known as the New York Bight. The Final Programmatic Environmental Impact Statement (Final PEIS) analyzes the potential impacts from offshore wind energy development within all six leases awarded in February 2022, including avoidance, minimization, mitigation, and monitoring measures that BOEM may require for any proposed offshore wind projects in these lease areas. French government unveils new offshore wind roadmap for the coming decade. From this announcement we can note the following: ⚡ Next tender (AO10) will include 9,2 GW (5,2GW Floating OW vs. 4GW Fixed OW). Tenderer selection should be announced in the coming months. ⚡⚡ 6 GW additional capacity has been identified for following steps. Most of this additional capacity will focus on floating offshore wind technology. 🐬 In the mean time, additional areas with high ecological value has been identified. 🍃 It is also reminded the value of a stakeholder engagement and the need to develop a robust environmental mitigation plan.
