Why the U.S. Air Force Needs 300 B-21 Raider Stealth Bombers 📐Strategic Necessity: The B-21 Raider is crucial for the U.S. Air Force amid fleet reductions and the challenge of developing sixth-generation aircraft. It provides the necessary capability to maintain military competitiveness, particularly against China. 📐Length of Stick and Range: With potential conflicts involving vast distances, especially in the context of challenges posed by China, the B-21's long-range capabilities become indispensable. Its ability to hold both conventional and nuclear targets at risk positions it as a vital asset for future warfare scenarios. 📐Practical Proven Design: The B-21, based on the proven design of the B-2 stealth bomber, offers reliability and readiness. Its production can leverage existing manufacturing capabilities, ensuring a quicker deployment compared to more ambitious, yet uncertain, projects. 📐Right Number? The Air Force's order of 100 units underscores the urgency, but a fleet of 300 is deemed necessary to bolster U.S. defenses effectively.

Today in Asia Times, I wrote about Australia's interest in acquiring US-made B-21 Raider stealth bombers as part of its defense strategy under the AUKUS partnership. These bombers, capable of long-range precision strikes, offer Australia immediate military advantages compared to nuclear submarines, which won’t be operational until the 2030s. The bombers align with Australia's goals of deterrence and countering potential threats in the Indo-Pacific, but their acquisition may strain relations with China. The B-21s provide a faster, more flexible option for Australia, enhancing its ability to project military power across vast distances. While supporters argue that these bombers would complement Australia's future submarines, critics point to the high cost and the risk of further provoking China. Additionally, there are concerns about the practical need for such advanced weaponry, with some experts suggesting cheaper alternatives like drones or patrol aircraft.

The United States appears to be focusing on outdated military strategies. As Russia and China advance with hypersonic missile technology capable of reaching Washington within 20 to 40 minutes, the U.S. continues to invest in upgrading its aging B-52 bombers to carry nuclear weapons. The B-52 bombers, though iconic, are large and relatively slow, making them easily detectable by surveillance satellites from the moment they take off from military bases. Given their extended flight times, such as the roughly seven hours needed to fly from Alaska to Siberia, they are vulnerable to interception by advanced air defense systems before they can reach their targets. In contrast, the rapid advancements in hypersonic technology by other nations highlight a significant gap in the U.S. military's current capabilities. The extensive reliance on older aircraft suggests a need for revitalizing domestic manufacturing and innovation to keep pace with modern threats and advancements in military technology. https://lnkd.in/esrjetKH

In a previous #ClusterRant on #AUKUS folly, I remarked: "Australia is not a nuclear state, nor an ICBM state. China has hypersonic kinetic penetrators that can be ICBM mounted. What precisely is our nation trying to achieve? Strike weapons welcome counter-strike weapons." Fractional Orbital Bombardment (FOB), ergo round-the-world missile systems were once the province of US-Soviet competition. The Soviets did field one. China would appear to have done the development work on this. For all of the AUKUS cretins in our national security community who were never any one of them actual Defense R&D Scientists (like moi), and do not know any physics of any consequence, just go read it and weep. These people in Australia who think that our foolish posturing as a "Big Boy" makes us strong are just like so many teens whose balls have yet to drop. They just don't get anything. It is a pack of imbeciles destroying our export industry while running with scissors. Like so much under-8 football. A scrum chasing the AUKUS ball. https://lnkd.in/gqhghbXC

5 February 1958, an F-86 fighter jet had a mid-air collision with a B-47 bomber carrying a Mark 15 hydrogen bomb during a training exercise. The pilot of the F-86 managed to eject before his aircraft disintegration, and the damaged bomber managed to make a harrowing emergency landing at Hunter Army Airfield, but not before it jettisoned the 7,600-pound bomb into the waters around Wassaw Sound so that it could lighten its load and prevent the bomb from exploding in the event that they crashed. A 10-week search mission by 100+ Navy personnel was unable to trace where the bomb fell. There are conflicting reports as to just how catastrophically dangerous the bomb is. The initial claims by the government were that it contained a dummy trigger and didn’t pose a threat unless it was disturbed. But, in 1994 a document was declassified that told a different story. According to 1966 Congressional testimony by then Assistant Secretary of Defense W.J. Howard to the US Congressional Joint Committee on Atomic Energy, the lost weapon was a complete, fully functional bomb with a nuclear capsule. If that is the case, and the bomb does indeed contain a plutonium trigger, the resulting explosion would include a fireball with a radius of over a mile and thermal radiation for up to 10 times that distance - not the way you want to get a tan while at the beach... In 2004, a private team led by retired Air Force Lt. Col. Derek Duke discovered high levels of radiation off of the tip of Little Tybee that aligned with description of where the bomb was possibly dropped, but a later investigation by the U.S. Air Force determined that the radiation came from natural deposits of monazite in the sand. So if anyone sees any frogs that glow in the dark around Tybee Island, please report the sighting to local authorities. It's official, the Northrop Grumman-made B-21 Raider has entered production after successful ground and flight tests at Edwards Air Force Base in California! At this current stage of low-rate production, Northrop Grumman has built or is in the process of building at least six test B-21s, with the Air Force's goal of fielding a fleet of at least 100 Raiders and the first entering service within the next few years. By the 2030s, the B-21 Raider is set to replace the aging B-1B Lancer and B-2 Spirit and be part of a two-bomber fleet comprised of these B-21 Raiders and another 76 of the upgraded B-52J Stratofortresses. Ellsworth Air Force Base in South Dakota is set to receive the first active B-21 Raider, with delivery expected to take place in the mid-2020s. Additionally, photographs have shown the B-21's nickname painted on its landing gear door -- Cerberus, the beastly multi-headed dog that guards the gates of Hades in Greek mythology. At a projected procurement cost of $692 million each, the Raider's advanced stealth capabilities will allow it to carry out "penetrating deep strike missions against advanced adversaries" with capabilities of carrying both conventional and nuclear weapons. This incredible feat of technology is sure to become an icon of superior capabilities! #airforce #b21 #raider #militarynews #flighttest #technology https://lnkd.in/eadQAm2z
