In 1937 W.T. Wooters a Pennsylvania Bell Telephone Co. general plant manager was giving a safety meeting to his district plant superintendents. One of his most memorable contributions to telephone service was his safety message that, "No job is so important and no service is so urgent-that we cannot take time to do the job safely" - this ultimately became the safe work creed for Bell Telephone Company. The statement is as brilliant as it is true. 𝗔𝘀𝗰𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝘄𝗲𝗹𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗗𝗮𝘃𝗶𝗱 𝗦𝗮𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝗮𝘀 𝗶𝘁𝘀 𝗻𝗲𝘄 𝗦𝗮𝗳𝗲𝘁𝘆 𝗗𝗶𝗿𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗿! (Part 2) We sat down with David to ask him some questions and get to know him a little better. 𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝗱𝗶𝗱 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗼𝘀𝗲 𝗔𝘀𝗰𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗮𝘀 𝗮 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗻𝘆 𝘁𝗼 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸 𝗳𝗼𝗿? I chose Ascendent for a few reasons. One, I really enjoy the type of demolition they perform. Technical full-building wrecks, bridges (infrastructure), while still maintaining smaller commercial projects with abatement as well. Another reason was Rick’s passion and commitment to bringing a positive safety culture to his organization. When he told me it was his final mission to provide his team a proper safety department, he had me sold. Throughout the process he has maintained communication with me for any questions. His understanding and concern for the magnitude of this decision for my family as well as myself really showed amazing care and passion. The type of company I wanted to work for. I love demolition! 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗱𝗼 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗹𝗼𝗼𝗸 𝗳𝗼𝗿𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝗺𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝗶𝗻 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗻𝗲𝘄 𝗿𝗼𝗹𝗲? I look forward to the new challenges and creating new relationships and friendships with my new co-workers. To me, culture can not be created from behind a desk. Spending as much time as possible in the field with our supervisors, providing knowledge and experience, with continued coaching and training will ultimately lead to the entire company's success and growth. All management's involvement will be key to creating and maintaining a positive safety culture. 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗯𝗶𝗴 𝗴𝗼𝗮𝗹 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘆𝗼𝘂'𝗿𝗲 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗼𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗱𝘀 - 𝗲𝗶𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗼𝗿 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗳𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆? I would like to attain a bachelor's degree in occupational safety and health to ultimately sit for my CSP certification. 𝗜𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝘆𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝘄𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝗮𝗱𝗱, 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗜 𝗱𝗶𝗱𝗻’𝘁 𝗮𝘀𝗸? I can't stress this enough! 👇🏻 Although this says "firefighter", this concept can apply to ANY profession. Think back to when you were first starting out in your career. Was there a seasoned veteran of the industry that "showed you the ropes"? Was there a person that took you under thier wing and helped you grow into the person you are today? If not, don't you wish you had that person in your life so that you didn't have to struggle to prove yourself? So that you didn't have to doubt yourself and wonder whether you're doing things the right way? Whenever I hire someone, in addition to seeing if they can do the job I'm hiring them for, I'm also evaluating them to see if I think their able to be coached and someone that could potentially take my spot later in life. At some point, I will leave my position and the company will need to keep going without me. Whether they quit, get fired, or anything else, at some point, that "senior firefighter" is going to leave your workplace, meaning someone is going to need to step up and fill those shoes. Are you helping out those who are new to the industry? Regardless of whether it's a recent college graduate, a middle-aged person who decided to switch careers later in life, or that person who was "voluntold" or thrown into the position, we need to help them become the future of the profession! This year our panelist discussed the critical risks they face in their day-to-day work, how they identify them and how to avoid injury or grave damage to our business operation.
