As an LGBTQ+ person, I know that the culture of the company you work for strongly affects both your work experience and daily life. I am happy to say that Strata has warmly welcomed me since I started, and it’s wonderful to be part of a company that supports LGBTQ+ people. It’s very important to highlight that as a community, we need to occupy more spaces, and the construction industry is one of them. According to a survey conducted in 2016 by the Construction Leadership Council, the LGBTQ+ community represented only 2% of construction employees. Among those LGBTQ+ surveyed, around 39% reported facing routine discrimination from colleagues or clients. While some aspects of our society seem to be improving since then, much work remains to be done. Facing this kind of situation in the workplace, or in any space, is completely unacceptable, and the community needs allies to fight against discrimination and inequality. If you are not part of the community, please remember that your support and advocacy for LGBTQ+ rights, dignity, and well-being are more than necessary, and your solidarity can make a big difference. 🏳️🌈✊

🌈 Celebrating Pride Month: A Personal Reflection 🌈 As we step into Pride Month, I find myself reflecting on what this time means to me—not just as a member of the LGBTQ+ community, but as someone who values diversity, acceptance, and love in all areas of life. June is Pride month. Commemorating the Stonewall riots, Pride Month is an inclusive celebration that honours our community, our history, achievements, and ongoing struggle for equality. I often come across posts across various social media platforms from people making statements such as "When is straight month?", "Why should they get an entire month to throw it down our throats?" or "It's disgusting and inhuman". It's these very comments that show why we still need to keep fighting for equality. This serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of acceptance, diversity, and love. It brings together individuals, organisations, and communities to advocate for LGBTQIA+ rights and celebrate the progress made towards a more inclusive society. Lead with kindness, Love is Love. There are few corporate initiatives as important as creating diverse, equitable, and inclusive spaces for the LGBTQ+ community. According to EY, Gen Z is six times more likely to identify as LGBTQ+ compared to Gen X, and with Gen Z making up 30% of the workforce by 2030, this underscores the growing necessity for inclusive policies in the workplace. While we celebrate and uplift the progress that has been made over the past few decades, we simultaneously acknowledge that we as a society have a long way to go in ensuring that every workplace embraces diversity, promotes equity, and empowers all individuals. Our work in this space inspires deep hope for what's to come. This month we celebrated #PrideMonth, a time to honour the LGBTQ+ community's history and resilience. But let's go beyond the rainbow and delve into the history that fuels our fight for equality. The Stonewall Riots of 1969, a pivotal moment in LGBTQ+ activism, were sparked by a courageous stand against police harassment. This ignited a movement for equal rights and acceptance, and continues to inspire us today. However, Pride is about more than just celebrating identity. It's about creating a truly inclusive environment. But how do we do that? a. Educate yourself: Learn about LGBTQ+ history, terminology and experiences. b. Challenge bias: Be mindful of unconscious biases and create a safe space for open conversations. c. Advocate for equality: Support LGBTQ+ rights and initiatives within your company and community. d. Be an ally. Speak up against discrimination and promote inclusivity. On a personal note Celebrating Pride Month is incredibly important to me. While we've made significant progress towards equality, the journey is far from over. In today's world, it's easy to assume that acceptance of the LGBTQ+ community equates to full equality. However, many LGBTQ+ individuals still face subtle biases and barriers that prevent them from being perceived as equally skilled or included in professional and social spheres. Inclusion goes beyond acceptance. It's about creating environments where everyone, regardless of their orientation or identity, feels valued and recognized for their abilities and contributions. We need to continue our efforts to challenge stereotypes, dismantle biases, and foster truly inclusive spaces. Let's use Pride Month not only to celebrate our progress but also to recommit to the ongoing work of ensuring that everyone can thrive authentically and equally. I still dream of a world where diversity is truly accepted and ideally even celebrated.
