On March 6, the first of two advanced Saab 340 Airborne Early Warning (AEW) aircraft has arrived in Poland. The procurement of these radar reconnaissance aircraft from Sweden and Saab, a deal finalized in July 2023 for SEK 600 million (approximately EUR 52 million), represents a strategic enhancement of Poland’s defence capabilities. The Saab 340 AEW aircraft, adapted from the Saab 340 regional turboprop airliner, plays a pivotal role in surveillance and command operations. It is equipped with the cutting-edge Erieye AEW/AEW&C system, boasting an active electronically scanned array (AESA) radar that sits atop the aircraft’s fuselage. This state-of-the-art radar system has the capability to track both airborne and maritime targets over distances exceeding 550 kilometers (342 miles), significantly extending Poland’s surveillance reach and enhancing its national security.
