A group of NATO countries are set to begin implementing a new project aimed at improving the alliance’s ability to quickly share intelligence gathered by space-based assets operated by both member nations and the commercial sector. Seventeen NATO members signed a memorandum of understanding for the Alliance Persistence Surveillance from Space (APSS) program as part of the annual NATO summit being held in Washington this week, the alliance announced Tuesday. Members will now move into a five-year implementation phase of the project, during which allies will contribute more than $1 billion “to leverage commercial and national space assets, and to expand advanced exploitation capacities,” according to a press release. https://lnkd.in/e3DY9Mag

Today I had the opportunity to ask the final question at this panel in the 2024 Royal United Services Institute Space Conference. Perhaps I felt under pressure to make it sharp and snappy when I referred to a couple of public figures as examples ... 🙋🏻♀️ 🤔 The question in my head was on the prospect of change with regard to the leading role of the US in NATO and whether other prominent allied space actors may seek strategic alliances with adversaries under the evolving geopolitical environment - and how that could impact long standing protections and defend approaches…..? Discuss 💡 #ukspacecommand #ussf #rusi #protectanddefend

Space has become increasingly vital to the security of the Euro-Atlantic region. NATO allies must enhance cooperation to address these evolving challenges, particularly those arising from potential military activities in space. This cooperation is to focus on three critical areas: 1️⃣ The multi-purpose applications of space 2️⃣ The increasing number of actors and systems 3️⃣ The increasingly rapid technological advancements. Read more in this new publication, exploring the global #space environment and #NATO’s strategic posture, the Alliance’s space capabilities and decision-making processes, and the implications of space threats for NATO’s deterrence and defence. ➡️ https://lnkd.in/daajcE-B 🖋️ Editors: Nicolò Fasola, PhD, Sonia Lucarelli, Alessandro Marrone, Maria Vittoria Massarin & Francesco N. In order to win, you need information dominance which leads into decision dominance and this is the basis for escalation / engagement dominance. The #spacedomain is of utmost importance to achiev this goal. #NeverADayWithoutSpace

[NETWORK]🌐 Over the last 10 years, the space domain has undergone a spectacular transformation, leading NATO to consider #space as an operational domain. In this context, the link between industry and NATO needs to be revisited so that NATO can take advantage of technological innovations. ➡️This is the role of the Space Reverse Industry Day held on 20th of February in Brussels, which the NATO Space COE had the opportunity to attend to better understand industrial developments and NATOs demands.🛰️ On this occasion, it was recalled the main steps underway in the implementation of Space within NATO. This was followed by several round tables where industrial players were able to exchange views with NATO representatives.💢 #WeAreNATO NATO Allied Command Transformation (ACT)

A team of researchers, including #NSRIFellows Dr. Michelle Black and Dr. Deanna House, from the NATO Science & Technology Organization (STO) and NATO Headquarters Supreme Allied Command Transformation (HQ SACT) carried out a wargame on space deterrence last month, bringing together 37 participants from nine NATO Nations. The Multi-Domain Space Deterrence Framework 2024 wargame was held April 29- May 2 at the Majoor Jan Linzel Complex in the Hague, and was hosted by the NLMOD- Royal Netherlands Air Force- Space Centre. --- ➡ Read the full summary article at https://lnkd.in/g7cEwziQ. ➡ Learn more about Dr. Black and Dr. House's work through the Nebraska Deterrence Lab at https://lnkd.in/gxQzw7uA --- Formed under the NATO STO Systems Concepts and Integration (SCI) and System Analysis and Studies (SAS) Panels, the team (SCI-SAS-351) was created to develop and test a comprehensive space deterrence framework. Such a framework would employ a full spectrum of deterrence options, and both national and NATO instruments of power (IoP). Space underpins the Alliance’s deterrence and defence missions, including the ability to navigate and track forces, position and target assets, and gather intelligence for informed decision-making. Space also enables the world economy, and its economic importance will continue to grow with future space travel and commerce. As the space domain becomes more contested and congested, there is an increased need to ensure its responsible use, and to protect space assets from growing threats. Aggressive acts to interfere with space systems can span a range of tactics – including grey zone tactics – and may involve weapons and dual-use systems capable of impacting space assets. #NATO #wargame #deterrence #integrateddeterrence #strategicdeterrence #defense #assurance #allies #space #spacedefense #Nebraska #Omaha
