Today I had the opportunity to ask the final question at this panel in the 2024 Royal United Services Institute Space Conference. Perhaps I felt under pressure to make it sharp and snappy when I referred to a couple of public figures as examples ... 🙋🏻♀️ 🤔 The question in my head was on the prospect of change with regard to the leading role of the US in NATO and whether other prominent allied space actors may seek strategic alliances with adversaries under the evolving geopolitical environment - and how that could impact long standing protections and defend approaches…..? Space has become increasingly vital to the security of the Euro-Atlantic region. NATO allies must enhance cooperation to address these evolving challenges, particularly those arising from potential military activities in space. #Space is a new commanding height of strategic competition, presenting the international community with new challenges as it grows more contested, congested and intense. Therefor NATO Allies are looking closely in to possibilities to address these evolving challenges, particularly those arising from potential military activities in space. A new joint #publication "Space: Exploring NATO’s Final Frontier" by NATO Allied Command Transformation (ACT), IAI - Istituto Affari Internazionali, and University of Bologna (Alma Mater Studiorum – Università di Bologna), the culmination of the Academic Conference in in Bertinoro, Italy, in November 2023, was released. [NETWORK]🌐 Over the last 10 years, the space domain has undergone a spectacular transformation, leading NATO to consider #space as an operational domain. In this context, the link between industry and NATO needs to be revisited so that NATO can take advantage of technological innovations. ➡️This is the role of the Space Reverse Industry Day held on 20th of February in Brussels, which the NATO Space COE had the opportunity to attend to better understand industrial developments and NATOs demands.🛰️ On this occasion, it was recalled the main steps underway in the implementation of Space within NATO. A team of researchers, including #NSRIFellows Dr. Michelle Black and Dr. Deanna House, from the NATO Science & Technology Organization (STO) and NATO Headquarters Supreme Allied Command Transformation (HQ SACT) carried out a wargame on space deterrence last month, bringing together 37 participants from nine NATO Nations. The Multi-Domain Space Deterrence Framework 2024 wargame was held April 29- May 2 at the Majoor Jan Linzel Complex in the Hague, and was hosted by the NLMOD- Royal Netherlands Air Force- Space Centre. --- ➡ Read the full summary article at https://lnkd.in/g7cEwziQ. ➡ Learn more about Dr. Black and Dr. House's work through the Nebraska Deterrence Lab at https://lnkd.in/gxQzw7uA --- Formed under the NATO STO Systems Concepts and Integration (SCI) and System Analysis and Studies (SAS) Panels, the team (SCI-SAS-351) was created to develop and test a comprehensive space deterrence framework. Such a framework would employ a full spectrum of deterrence options, and both national and NATO instruments of power (IoP). Space underpins the Alliance’s deterrence and defence missions, including the ability to navigate and track forces, position and target assets, and gather intelligence for informed decision-making. Space also enables the world economy, and its economic importance will continue to grow with future space travel and commerce. As the space domain becomes more contested and congested, there is an increased need to ensure its responsible use, and to protect space assets from growing threats.
