Each year on June 15th we celebrate International Women in Mining Day, recognizing the trail blazers, both women and men, who have laid the path for inclusivity and empowerment in mining throughout the world.   The 2024 theme is, “I am Mining and I Belong”. As the mining sector continues to evolve, this phrase serves as a powerful reminder of the diverse individuals who contribute to it and the importance of creating a more inclusive and sustainable future for all. At Procon this theme goes further, as it underscores the importance of culture and inclusivity that is fostered day in and out throughout the company. As per Mining Industry Human Resources Council (MiHR) women make up 7.9% of the Canadian underground mining workforce (2024). Procon is a proud employer of women at our project sites and offices across Canada. Women “grubstakers” sometimes financed the initial cost of prospecting in return for part-interest in any claim.  In 1863, Mrs. Robert K. Reid discovered a vein of silver ore and filed a claim in her own name in Bingham Canyon, Utah, the site of one of largest mines in the U.S. Excited to be part of organizations like The Femina Collective (Founder: Beth Borody CDI.D and recently joined by Peggy Bell), Women Get On Board Inc. (WGOB) (founded by Dr. Deborah Rosati FCPA, FCA, ICD.D, GCB.D, CCB.D) and Women in Mining Canada. (Current Chair Melissa Ng, MBA, P.Geo. founded by Amanda van Dyke) These groups are fast-growing in memberships and fostering collaboration, expanding capabilities, and providing a platform for women to enhance their visibility in the mining community. We have made some progress with Women on Boards and now CEOs of companies (just to name a few): Lomiko Metals (Belinda Labatte, CFA, MBA, ICD.D,) Torex Gold Resources Inc (Jody Kuzenko) Amerigo Resources (TSX: ARG) (OTCQX: ARREF) (Aurora Davidson) And let's not forget women like Margaret "Peggy" Kent who gained a long and controversial run as a mining executive, particularly as CEO of Royal Oak Mines (when she was named Peggy Witte) in the mid 90's when female representation was minimal in Mining. The International Day of Women in Mining (IDWIM), an annual global campaign, plays a crucial role in highlighting the achievements of women in this field and advocating for gender equity. 🌍 Empowering Women in Mining 🌟 : A Path to Leadership and Innovation The inaugural WiMSA Symposium was a powerful reminder of the need to transition from dialogue to action in supporting women in the mining industry. As Noleen Pauls, WiMSA board chairperson, emphasized, “We’ve come a long way... but we’re still talking about the same issues. This conference aims to change that by focusing on real solutions.” Dr. Nompumeleo Obokoh, CEO of the South African Council for Natural Scientific Professions, inspired attendees with her keynote address, highlighting the resilience and tenacity of women in mining: “We are the rocks, the unbreakable forces that shape the future... Let us commit to creating an industry where women are not just present but are leading, innovating, and transforming.” The discussions on career growth, understanding rights against gender-based violence, and the need for supportive structures like Thuthuzela Care Centres were crucial in shedding light on the challenges and opportunities ahead. It’s time for us to champion women’s access to leadership positions, where they can innovate and drive change. Let’s ensure that as we move forward, we rise together. Forum Women and Mines - Integrating Gender into Local Content Policy at Endeavour Mining I am excited to share my participation in the recent forum organized by Endeavour Mining on May 15-16, 2024, focused on the integration of gender into local content policies. This event provided a platform for crucial discussions and exchange of ideas on empowering women in the mining industry. During the two days, we engaged in some insightful panel discussions: Opportunities for Women Entrepreneurs in the Mining Sector - Exploring how mining companies can support and create opportunities for women-led businesses. Experience Sharing - Discussing the challenges and successes related to access to information and market entry for women entrepreneurs. Financing for Women's Entrepreneurship - Delving into the various financing options available and how they can be made more accessible to women. These discussions were enlightening and reinforced the importance of gender inclusion in driving sustainable growth within the mining industry. I look forward to applying the insights gained and contributing to this vital cause.
