This #MemorialDay, we pay tribute to everyone who died while serving the U.S. Armed Forces. But, I would be remiss if I didn’t also talk about the incredibly hard and unfair transition to civilian life hundreds of thousands of survivors undergo each year. Did you know that despite comprising 5.8% of the labor force, veterans experience a lower labor force participation rate compared to nonveterans? BUT, we also need to discuss how the U.S. military has historically targeted on underrepresented populations for service. In fact, a Dec. 2022 The New York Times report highlighted how thousands of public high school students in majority poor, Black and Brown districts are funneled into the U.S. military’s Junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps program. How can we better support our veterans in their transition to civilian life, while also acknowledging the innate problems with the U.S. “War Machine” complex?
