In order for my team and I to start building an innovation roadmap and a business strategy, understanding customers' needs it is crucial to identify both their known unmet needs and their unknown unmet needs.
1. Known Unmet Needs: These are the needs that customers are aware of but are not currently fulfilled by existing products or services in the market. To identify these needs, Musubi Brand Agency conducts market research, anthropological observations, surveys, interviews, and analyse customer feedback. For example, if customers express frustration with the complexity of a product, there's a known unmet need for simplicity and user-friendliness.
2. Unknown Unmet Needs: These are needs that customers might not be consciously aware of, yet they can significantly impact their satisfaction and purchasing decisions once addressed. Identifying these needs requires a deeper understanding of customer behaviour, preferences, and pain points. Techniques such as ethnographic research, observation, and trend analysis helps us uncover these needs. For instance, Pizza hut dominated the market (especially in Australia). They originally had mostly eat-in restaurants and offered the famous “all-you-can-eat” options. In Australia, the arrival of Domino’s in 1983 challenged Pizza Hut’s position as the leading chain in Australia. Domino’s initiated the home delivery pizza trade. From the mid-nineties, the eat-in Pizza Huts began to disappear in favour of the shop-front take-aways with home delivery. As of mid-2022, only 13 remain Australia-wide.
The unknown unmet need was TIME. Dominos saw the trend of increased work hours and the frustration and pressure it placed on families to herd their kids to an eat-in establishment.
Once both known and unknown unmet needs are identified, my team can develop innovative solutions to address them and create value for customers. This could involve designing new products or services, improving existing offerings, or enhancing the overall customer experience.
