#Employers, your employees' #MentalHealth is critical to your company's survival. Own it sooner rather than later. How many people have been in a McDonald's drive-thru and been absolutely appalled by the service? I will confess, when I was consuming a lot of fast food there were certain places I quit cold turkey merely due to poor customer service (Popeye's, why is there always a 20-30 minute wait for chicken when chicken is pretty much all you serve?). This issue is not limited to fast food companies either. You find the problem in grocery stores, department stores, libraries, law firms, hotels, credit card companies, doctor's offices and even hospitals (where "hospitality" should reign supreme). My take on it is that this poor #CustomerService issue, which is seemingly a national trend, is not so much about specific companies. Rather, it's a reflection of the conditions of the workers. Many employees are dealing with high volumes of stress, anxiety, depression, and frustration. The mental health challenges abound. I am not saying these things are all the employer's fault, nor am I saying that employers are completely void of all responsibility for these conditions. But what I am saying is, like it or not, you are going to have to take some responsibility and address these issues. An EAP (Employee Assistance Program) is a good starting point. Anybody else got ideas or suggestions on things employers can offer to help employees cope with life and, consequently, improve the client and #CustomerExperience?

Prioritising People Over Profit A shocking read for us at The Ferry House, The Caterer have reported that 85% of hospitality professionals are experiencing poor mental health within their roles - something we just can't quite comprehend! Hospitality workers said the symptoms of poor mental health, such as disturbed sleep (47%), anxiety (44%) and depression (31%), became more pronounced with irregular shift patterns (52%) or uncertain work shifts (54%) and almost a third (29%) of hospitality professionals stressed the importance of better work/life balance. Not only is helping our employees with their work/life balance a top priority for us, with our chefs already working a four day workweek, we also actively prioritise our teams mental health. A huge part of this is our closing over Christmas, with owner Victoria Burden expressing why we feel this is important; "Of course, there's a financial implication to our decision. Realistically, we might make more profit by staying open during Christmas week than we do in the entire month of January. However, our commitment to our team's well-being takes precedence over short-term financial gains. If we ever find ourselves needing that one week to survive at the expense of our team's happiness, we believe we've failed as a business. Profit should never come before our people." With a quarter of people in the survey stating they wanted better managerial support on progression, we take pride in supporting 'homegrown talent', promoting from within, with majority of our Senior Leadership Team starting as Front of House staff or temps in our Kitchen. Sure, HR plays a role, but no more than the Operations, Safety, Finance and/or Sales departments. In other words, 𝘁𝗼 𝗯𝗲 𝘀𝘂𝗰𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗳𝘂𝗹, 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗱 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗶𝘁𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗲𝘅𝗲𝗰𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻, 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗿𝗲 𝗼𝗿𝗴𝗮𝗻𝗶𝘇𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻. 👈 As for Mindful Monday’s and Wellness Wednesdays, these are support tools, and nothing more. Because if we don't eliminate the toxic workplace behaviors that contribute to chronic conditions, depression, anxiety, substance misuse and suicidal ideation,* they're a waste of 𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗺𝗼𝗻𝗲𝘆. #worklifewednesday This time of year can be hard at work. Dark mornings. Dark nights. Staff off sick. Thoughts around how we can help support our staff at this time of year. 1. Encourage staff to get outside around lunchtime including the leaders. 2. Make sure you are thinking about staff safety even if it means allowing flexi working so they don’t have to travel in or out in the dark. 3. Think about some social events to help keep that community feeling. 4. Avoid being drawn into bowls of sweet treats and be more thoughtful with fruit teas and veggies. 5. Remember that saying thank you means a lot, creating a culture of gratitude in the team is an easy step to take to improve wellbeing. 6. Think about creating a drying room or space for staff to put wet things. 7. And the favourite of the moment - take your meetings out walking! #autumnworking #wellbeingatwork
