Youth Day is around the corner, and the theme is ‘Youth power, growing South Africa together’. The Deloitte State of the South African Child report, co-authored with Nelson Mandela Children’s Fund, reflects on the critical risks facing our children, and the future of the country. Did you know: 4.8 million children live below the poverty line, and 62.1% of children are multi-dimensionally poor with 51% of children being monetary poor. These children don’t eat on a regular basis, they often don’t have shoes, and many don’t attend school. Before joining Good Return I was blissfully unaware of the insane inequity in finance and opportunity. With 1 billion unbanked globally, particularly women, I now know our work to upskill business owners in cash management and ensure they can access and assess finance means they can grow their business, and so has a direct impact on helping people move away from poverty. Woman by woman, village by village … by district, by country, by region. The numbers are coming down in the wake of our work, with ripples forward to future generations as the barriers themselves are dismantled. Whatever the future of banking is, let’s be sure it is fair and inclusive.
Did you know there is a direct correlation between financial exclusion and poverty? 99% of adult Australians have access to banking services, however some of our closest neighbours have less than half those rates. For example, a staggering 55% of Solomon Islanders are ‘unbanked’ meaning they cannot save or access credit, and it is very difficult for them to get ahead or prepare for health challenges or other financial emergencies. That’s why Good Return is focused on bringing the vulnerable and marginalised communities into the formal banking system to stop poverty. LET’S STOP POVERTY WITH INCLUSION. Today is the International Day of Charity. Why don’t you make today your day to ‘bring them in’ by donating to Good Return’s financial capability programs running across the Asia Pacific region? Gordon Brown spoke to the press yesterday talking about the realities of poverty in the UK; "I am really worried about the state of poverty in Britain at the moment. And I really want people to focus on it because you don't hear any government minister ever talking about poverty or about Universal Credit and how it needs to be reformed. "It's their duty to do something about it because in their midst and under their watch, far more children - more than four million children in this country - are in poverty." In the current climate, reuse charities are filling the gaps where local support would ordinarily have plugged the #costoflivingcrisis gap. Faced with hundreds of people in need each week, our reuse members are providing items free of charge from their own reserves to keep up with the demand. This equates to £7,000 per month per charity. It is clear that is not sustainable. Our charity members need products and funding now more than ever before. If you are a company looking to donate quality household items, please get in touch on hannah.jordan@reuse-network.org.uk. If you are a funder looking to make a difference to reuse charities across the UK please contact info@reuse-network.org.uk. https://lnkd.in/eTR7YVrf

Who are Turn2us? We are a national charity offering information and practical help to people facing financial insecurity. But what is financial security? Turn2us defines it as having enough money to live well and having the resources - as individuals and collectively - to build confidence in the future. Simply put, we want to lift people out of poverty BUT ALSO stop people falling into poverty, which often people are just one financial shock or crisis away from. So how does Turn2us challenge poverty? We challenge poverty by working towards a future where everyone in the UK has financial security so that they can thrive. We do this by... Building tools, such as our Benefit Calculator, Grant Search Tool and PIP Helper, used by people just like you. Providing clear and helpful information for you, based on your circumstances. Strengthening communities by working with local organisations and people who have experience of financial hardship. Campaigning to create change in the systems that lead to financial insecurity, such as the social care system and benefit system. What can you do to challenge poverty? Help create a brighter future and fight financial insecurity with Go Orange, fundraising to support the work we do Spread the message on your socials Get the System Working for you by using our tools and information Let’s Challenge Poverty together: https://lnkd.in/gTkC2YWz #ChallengePoverty #GetTheSystemWorking

Today marks #WorldPovertyDay, also known as the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty 🌏 Poverty is more common in the UK than you might think. In 2022/23, this was more than 1 in 5 people in the UK (21%), a staggering 14.3 million people. It can take on many forms, including fuel poverty, food insecurity, material deprivation, and being unable to participate in social activities. Everything we do is to fight poverty in our communities - giving energy advice to save money and keep homes warm and healthy, offering employment support, skills training, and activities for children. We also help our beneficiaries to access further support based on need, from emergency fuel vouchers and food banks, to debt advice and mental health support. All our work is funded by local and national funders, could you help us support more people? #InternationalDayForTheEradicationOfPoverty⠀ ⠀ Today serves as a beacon of hope, recognizing the millions who endure the quiet, ongoing struggle of poverty. It reminds us of our shared responsibility uplift those who have been marginalized and overlooked. ⠀ At Rex Mafiana Foundation (RMF), we believe that quality education is critical in breaking this cycle of poverty, which is not merely a lack of financial resources but a systemic issue that robs individuals of their dignity, potential, and opportunity.⠀ ⠀ By investing in education, we empower individuals with the skills and knowledge they need to unlock better economic opportunities and improve social mobility thus helping to reduce poverty in the short, medium, and long term.⠀ ⠀ When children receive a solid education, they become change-makers, capable of breaking free from their circumstances. Education gives them the tools to lift their families, contribute to their communities, and build brighter futures. This ripple effect fosters a culture of learning, resilience, and growth that benefits everyone.⠀ ⠀ As we reflect on the importance of this day, we invite you to support RMF's programs. Your donations can provide essential learning resources, safe educational spaces, and help families invest in their children’s futures. You can donate to our scholarship funds, volunteer your time, or simply spread the word about the Rex Mafiana Foundation. By supporting our programs, you invest in the future of Africa’s children. Together, we can break the cycle of poverty and build a better, more equitable future for all. 🌍 ⠀ #SDG1 #Inclusion #EndPoverty #RMF #MakeADifference #SowingSeeds #EmpowerThroughEducation #BreakTheCycle #HopeForChange⠀ #CommunityDevelopment #TogetherWeCan #InvestInFuture #RexMafianaFoundation

This is a sobering UNICEF league table on changes in child poverty over 7 years up to 2021 and the UK is at bottom with a 20% increase in the child poverty income rate. Poverty is most often defined by income. But for most children, poverty is about more than just money. It is about growing up in a home without enough heat or nutritious food. Poverty means no new clothes, no telephone and no money for a birthday celebration. These deprivations have consequences that can last a lifetime. Research shows that children in poor families are less likely to complete a good education. At Inclusion Education we are passionate about making a positive difference for our learners and students. One of the ways we are supporting them is by raising money for our #LittleHelpFund. Everyday we have been opening our online advent calendar to share just one of the items our Little Help Fund might go towards and these are fundamental things at the heart of child poverty like food, clothing, access to wifi & tech, bed & utilities - all with the aim of supporting the young people in our care. You can show your support by donating to us and learn more about the fund and how to donate here https://lnkd.in/eCNiAyCr #LittleHelpAdventCampaign #Advent #HelpingHandsForAdvent #FundraisingCampaign #SupportAdventInitiatives #ChildPoverty https://lnkd.in/erdjcWBG
