36 scholars took a trip to Riobamba, Ecuador with Partners for Andean Community Health (PACH) as part of our Global Citizens Program! They rode horses in Cotopaxi National Park, rafted on the Pastaza River, and assisted in providing medical care to 650 individuals in six communities. The knowledge and skills our scholars attain through these experiences ensures they are prepared to succeed in an increasingly interconnected world and prepares them to embrace the challenges and opportunities of our globalized society. That is the power of our Global Citizens Program! Jacinta Price in her 2021 essay, Worlds Apart: Remote Indigenous Disadvantage in the Context of Wider Australia, states, "The purpose of this report is to demonstrate the wicked problems Regional and Remote Indigenous communities face. While no single cause can explain Indigenous disadvantage, the severe socio-economic disadvantage experienced by these communities can be demonstrated...the situation in these communities is in dire need of a radical solution." Yesterday, contrary to all research in every discipline across Australia, she assured the National Press Club that there were no Indigenous people suffering from the effects of colonisation and intergenerational trauma. In fact their lives were made better by colonisation. How about a long-considered and rational solution, evolving from regional dialogues held across the country for Constitutional change establishing a Voice to Parliament on issues affecting Indigenous People? Yes!

#Report | How can we affirm the #dignity of people receiving aid? Our latest report, “Affirming Dignity in International Development: Prioritizing the Most Promising Practices,” authored by IDinsighters Tom Wein and Boswell Munthali, along with Paul Perrin from the Pulte Institute for Global Development, dives into this question using a 'wisdom of the crowd' approach. 🔎 The report surveyed 70 development practitioners who have expressed interest in dignity and 251 Kenyan respondents and asked them to select their top recommendations for upholding dignity practices. By selecting the most promising practices, the authors hope to further the study of dignity and development, inform more respectful aid practices, and identify which practices should be developed and tested more rigorously. 🔗Read the full report here: https://lnkd.in/gf6pywD5

Today is the International Day of Democracy which provides an opportunity to promote and uphold the principles of democracy as a fundamental human right. From 2021 to 2023 I had the pleasure to investigate, together with Kim Weger, Vlad Fedorov + the BGBA team, the trends in #placemaking in the context of citizen #democracy in Bulgaria and Norway, as part of the project “Neighborhood Democracy in Urban Communities”, funded by EEA and Norway Grants. Based on this research we created a placemaking toolkit to enhance democratic citizen participation. If you are interested in the potential of placemaking for democracy, take a look to our publications: PLACEMAKING FOR DEMOCRACY: A STUDY OF SUCCESSES IN BULGARIA AND NORWAY https://lnkd.in/dRfZr7aX PLACEMAKING FOR DEMOCRACY: COMMUNITY TOOLKIT https://lnkd.in/dRfZr7aX

🆕 We are delighted to announce that we are launching new country profiles on Georgia and Türkiye in our StatelessnessINDEX, which brings the total number of countries to 32. These additions shed light on the unique challenges and progress made in resolving statelessness in these two countries. Georgia has made significant progress in addressing #statelessness, including implementing UN conventions and introducing a statelessness determination procedure in 2012. Recent efforts, such as a 2022 door-to-door campaign, have reduced the number of stateless individuals. Since 2024, Georgia has reduced the naturalisation period for stateless people to five years. However, gaps in implementation remain, particularly concerning the Romani population and birth registration. 🔗 Full country profile: https://lnkd.in/eH-BUr8A Türkiye hosts a large refugee population, including many stateless individuals, but data on their exact numbers is incomplete. While Türkiye has a statelessness determination procedure established in 2013, access barriers exist. Stateless individuals receive some rights but lack a clear path to naturalisation. Legal safeguards exist to prevent childhood statelessness, but implementation challenges persist. 🔗 Full analysis here: https://lnkd.in/eajyYbqf ⭐ To learn more about these two new country profiles and the updated data for 15 other countries, join our upcoming annual webinar on statelessness. In conversation with experts working in different countries, we will present our annual state of play assessment of key trends on statelessness in Europe. 📅 Thursday 21 March, 11:00 - 12:00 CET Register online: https://lnkd.in/eUGfVhaM

A great summary of the deliberations from The Charter Project Africa 's latest installment of its regional dialogues as convened by consortium member Democracy Works Foundation. It aimed to reflect on the roles played by Regional Economic Communities and normative frameworks in advancing democratic governance and electoral integrity in Africa. A worthwhile parting shot, "Democracy works only if we all play our part. Every vote cast, every knowledge that is shared, every dialogue that is heard and every effort made for inclusion and accountability, contributes to the resilience of democracy." #Democracy #Governance #Africa https://lnkd.in/dEf5gj69

🗞️ In a digital age where information is vital, it's so sad to see the flow of news and information restricted here in Canada on social media. 🇨🇦💔 🤝 We need to push to have a society where transparency and access to diverse news sources are upheld. It's not just about free speech, it's about fostering a well-informed country. 🙌📚 🇨🇦 I hope somehow we can work to push this issue and work towards solutions that benefit our nation and its people. 🤝🗣️ #FreedomOfInformation #CanadaNews #MediaFreedom #SocietyMatters #TransparencyMatters #CanadianGovernment #AccessToInformation

The power of lived experience comes to Westminister, but we were doing it well before today! Appointments like James Timpson, Patrick Vallance, Wes Streeting and Angela Rayner show that experts by experience are part of the policy puzzle. Regional Mayors again know their area extensively, but more importantly they meet locals who know their neighbourhood like nobody else. The idea there will be more seeking to gather information from people furthest from power can only be positive. Much like the New Zealand model of Government, relevant experience and willing to listen to those living with experience gives a fresh perspective on society’s issues. They help to shape that thorny issue Thatcher mentioned in 1979, the elusive common interest which in my opinion felt a little sidelined lately. But more importantly, with such a huge majority, lived experience can be a solution to hold those with the power to account. There will be no corners to hide in, lived experience shines that light on what a policy really does for voters and children. Common interest is never perfect, but with lived experience and experts by experience, we can edge it closer to benefitting as ‘close to most’ as we can. I cannot wait to utilise lived experience in these new times to keep pushing on social justice! #LivedExperience #ExpertByExperience #Policy #Accountability #Narrative #Government
