This week on #SSETS, I discuss the UN SDGs focus in my area of expertise as #MySDGfocusWithSSETS.
Out of the 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDG), the top four that my area of expertise aligns with are SDG 6, SDG 9, SDG 13 and SDG 15.
#Goal 6: Clean Water and Sanitation
As an expert in surveying and geoinformatics, I can identify places where water is being wasted and inefficiently used. This information can then be used to guide water conservation initiatives and aid in the building of sanitary facilities. Geomatics can assist in monitoring and forecasting the effects of climate change on water resources, facilitating adaptation and resilience methods. This helps to guarantee universal access to clean water and sanitation and encourages sustainable water management practices.
#Goal 9: Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure
My area of expertise aligns with this SDG by supporting infrastructure development (in the construction industry), transportation management, and urban planning through accurate spatial data, mapping, and monitoring. These inputs inform sustainable urban development, driving innovation and economic growth.
#Goal 13: Climate Action
As a geospatial scientist and environmentalist, I provide critical spatial data and analytics to monitor and mitigate climate change impacts.
#Goal 15: Life on Land
My research area includes land surveying. Therefore, I am involved in collecting and analysing spatial data to track deforestation, land degradation, and biodiversity loss. I recommend conservation efforts and the promotion of eco-friendly land use practices that preserve ecosystem services and biodiversity.
In the course of #SSETS Pilot Intervention, I have had the privilege of connecting with Prof. Ojigi Mustapha Lazarus and Prof. Adewuyi Taiye, who are experts and luminaries in my field.
Furthermore, eHealth Africa, Esri, FIG - International Federation of Surveyors are respectively an NGO, an industry partner, and a professional body that aligns with my top 4 UN SDGs.
For all I have received in #SSETS thus far, special thanks to the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office, British Council, National Universities Commission (NUC), Lancaster University, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, Dr. Akanimo Odon, Dr Viola Akhigbe and all other coaches working day and night, for us to succeed as #EntrepreneurialAcademics.
