At an estimated $9.8 billion, the Paris 2024 Olympics are projected to be the 6th most expensive Games in history. Hosting the Olympics is a delicate balance between upfront cost and the long-term economic benefits the Games are expected to yield. The nearly $19 billion spent on the Athens Olympics burdened the country for years and contributed to the Greek debt crisis. The Olympics budget represents 0.4% of total French GDP - and the government expects benefits across all segments of the economy. Happy to be one of the key note speakers at last weeks ENGSO European Sports Platform in Lisbon. My presentation focused on the following three parts 1️⃣ Sport must secure order in its own house by setting up bodies, which can ensure a competent fight against doping and matchfixing. A court system which is able to protect the fundamental democratic principels in sports. A safeguarding system protecting our children and youth and a body which can deal with ethical challenges and issues in sport 2️⃣ A complete transperant funding making sure that the money sports receive is well invested in both developing grassroots and elite sport 3️⃣ An internation obligation to pursue the best possible governance in international sport to protect the respect and acknowledge of sport in the broader public.

The Olympics stand as a profound symbol of global unity, athletic excellence, and cultural celebration. Recognizing the transformative potential of these quadrennial games, Qatar has long aspired to host them, aiming to become the first Arab and Muslim nation to achieve this historic milestone. Yet, Qatar's journey to host the Olympics has not been without its challenges. Despite unsuccessful bids for the 2016 and 2020 games, the nation has remained steadfast in its commitment to sports, investing heavily in state-of-the-art training facilities and cutting-edge sporting infrastructure. So, what would it take for Qatar to host the Olympics? National federations are responsible for monitoring lex sportiva and integrating its principles into their internal legislation, ensuring consistency and alignment with global sports governance. In conclusion, lex sportiva, with its incorporation of para-diplomacy, provides a robust framework for international cooperation in sports.
