Engineering Team Leader at CIVIX / Water New Zealand On-Site Wastewater Management Systems Group Committee Member / Young Engineers Chair for Auckland
Thanks to CIVIX for the opportunity to attend the Water New Zealand Conference 2024. It was wonderful to reconnect with familiar faces and make new connections within the industry. I look forward to future collaborations! In my opinion, some key takeaways from the conference include: - Investment in Infrastructure: There is a significant need for improvements and investment in three waters infrastructure across Aotearoa. - Te Mana o te Wai: It's crucial that Te Mana o te Wai is applied appropriately to ensure the sustainability and health of our waterways. - Drinking Water Treatment: Many drinking water treatment systems are lacking. Notably, there has been a recent push for the installation of Protozoa barriers, and Taumata Arowai is committed to regulating Drinking Water Quality. - Onsite Wastewater Treatment and Disposal: Currently, onsite wastewater treatment and disposal are largely unregulated and unchecked, which poses risks to drinking water, receiving environments, and public health. When done well, it offers a sustainable solution for developments - my goal and passion. Overall, I am inspired by the discussions and innovations presented at the conference and am excited about a career that can help make improvements in this field.

🌊 Arburg Supports “pureelbe” Project: A 1,083 km Swim for Clean Water 🌊 From August 16 to September 10, 2024, Andreas Fath, known as the “swimming professor,” swam the entire 1,083 km length of the Elbe River in Germany to raise awareness about water pollution and microplastics. Sponsored by the K Trade Fair exhibitor ARBURG GmbH + Co KG, Hansgrohe Group and Furtwangen University, this impressive feat highlighted the urgent need for clean water and environmental protection. Arburg’s support for the “pureelbe” project aligns with its commitment to sustainable production and circular economy initiatives under the ‘arburgGREENworld’ program. Impressive Journey: Prof. Fath swam from the source of the Elbe in the Czech Republic to its mouth in Cuxhaven, covering an average of 46 km per day. Scientific Focus: Daily water samples were collected and analyzed for microplastics and a special filter membrane on his wetsuit provided additional data on water quality. Raising Awareness: Along the route, workshops, seminars and clean-up events were organized to educate and engage the public in protecting this vital resource. 🙌 What an impressive action to raise awareness for such crucial topics! ♻️ #KTradeFair #PlasticsandRubber #Sustainability #CircularEconomy

The main take away from the Scottish Land & Estates Conference yesterday was that ‘less strategy and more doing’ was required for rural Scotland. Governments need to provide leadership for regulatory direction, with solutions coming from industry. Anas Sarwar MSP confirmed this stating the role of government was 3-fold; 1. Collaboration and partnership working 2. Develop strategic long term planning 3. Provide the ‘convening’ power The theme of the conference, Resilience: Building successful businesses for the future attracted thought provoking speakers and the case study and panel sessions were inspiring. There is a raft of policy currently swirling all of which need the ‘so what’ answering. The integration between food production and the environment was cemented - Vicki Swales said “without nature land based businesses are threatened” and regenerative agriculture was mentioned a number of times - ties in well with Savills Rural Reseach Food and the Environment spotlight due out early June. Tim Bradshaw highlighted 3 key takeaways to build personal resilience: 1. Focus on intelligence not information. Take a tactical pause! 2. Enable resilience in others - it only takes a human touch to make a huge difference 3. FEAR = false expectation appearing real I.e focus on what you can do Sarah-Jane Laing summed up the day “words aren’t enough, we need direct action”. Evelyn Channing Hugo Struthers Lucy Jenner

It was great to hear the ideas of future generations- there are some genius ideas out there and we look forward to implementing these into Swinton!💡🌟#sustainability #speakersforschools
Third and final day of the Bedale High School and Swinton Estate sustainability team’s year 9 project ‘Your Sustainable Future.’ A project with Speakers for Schools on how hospitality can operate in even more sustainable ways. Last week the students met with key Swinton Managers Laura Angel John Smith MIH Eleanor Paddison and Joanne King to introduce our current measures and set the students the task of researching and presenting some practicable strategies to implement on the Estate. The students came for a site-visit on a very wet and blowy day to see some of our commitments in action with tours of the spa, biomass with Steven Bradley and walled gardens with Chef Andrew Mangan then today the students blew our minds with simply inspired, funny, brilliant and thought provoking presentations! Well done to the winners whose competitiveness was joyous. #hospitality #sustainbility #hospitalitystarsoftgefuture
