As we commemorate the emancipation of enslaved African Americans on this day in 1865, we are reminded of the progress made towards justice and equality. The journey towards freedom serves as a powerful testament to the indomitable spirit and leadership of those who fought for their rights. Juneteenth teaches us valuable lessons in leadership – the importance of standing up against oppression, advocating for change, and leading with courage and conviction. It reminds us that true leadership involves not only guiding others but also fighting for justice and equality for all. Leadership on Juneteenth means empowering marginalized voices, amplifying stories of resilience, and creating opportunities for growth and advancement. It requires us to champion diversity and inclusion, standing together in solidarity to dismantle systemic barriers. As we celebrate Juneteenth, let us recommit ourselves to being empathetic, inclusive, and courageous leaders. Let us honor the legacy of those who paved the way for freedom and equality and continue to strive for a more just and equitable society. On this Fourth of July, we're reminded that true progress comes from actively fighting for justice. 💪 Nwamaka Agbo's powerful piece in The Chronicle of Philanthropy highlights the crucial role of organized resistance led by Black Americans in driving democracy's greatest advancements. "Those who seek the full realization of our democracy strive only for the narratives and promises made to all Americans. As history shows, progress is achieved by constantly demanding greater inclusion and equity. Social advancements aren't handed out to people standing in line, patiently waiting their turn." Agbo also addresses the shortcomings of philanthropy: "Philanthropy's heavy-handed restricted funding fails to recognize that people live not in silos but lead whole and integrated lives." It is a moral responsibility to use our voice, power, and resources to support those committed to the ever-enduring struggle for a more just world, a fair and equitable democracy, and the right for everyone to participate in this great multiracial democratic experiment. Shifting to liberatory practices requires deep attention to relationships, structure, and power in organizations. At The LeadersTrust, we are slowly building out our liberatory practices and framework to shape how we work with each other and our partners. There are no road maps on how to build a liberatory culture, so there are a lot of lessons learned along the way. Grateful for this article from Harvard Business Review by Alli Myatt on the need and impact of bringing in liberatory practices to the workplace. The shift from an extractive model to a more inclusive model where everyone can be seen and heard needs more attention. "Shifting business fundamentals away from extraction toward liberation can fundamentally change our businesses. In the words of the Combahee River Collective, “If Black women were free, it would mean that everyone else would have to be free since our freedom would necessitate the destruction of all the systems of oppression.” Liberatory practices that center the wisdom of Black women have the potential to transform our workplaces and offer a path to doing great work together." #inclusion #equity #liberatorypractices #culture #philanthropy #nonprofit https://lnkd.in/gDUKK8mB

Unfinished Business: Racism and Sexism on the Ballot 16 years ago, I stood in Grant Park, witnessing the first Black president of the United States give his victory speech. That night, I cycled back to my apartment, broke down, and sobbed for hours, releasing months of pent-up emotions—worry and fear, but also a deep gratitude. Barack Obama's election felt like justice finally tipping in the right direction. "And where we are met with cynicism and doubts and those who tell us that we can't, we will respond with that timeless creed that sums up the spirit of a people: Yes, we can.” - Barack Obama. Today, we have the chance to make history again. A Black woman can win the presidency if we mobilize and vote. Many doubted America was ready for a Black president, and the stakes are even higher now. America’s longstanding burdens of racism and sexism weigh heavily on us, particularly as the rights and inclusion of women and people of colour face significant threats across the country. Remember: change can drive progress, especially when progress is stalled. I stand with Kamala Harris. I encourage the Black and Brown Americans in my network to remember that we can, and that we did before. Stay hopeful, and activate your communities to leverage our shared privilege as citizens to exercise our vote. Let's make history again. Yes, we can. #KamalaHarris #Vote2024 #YesWeCan
