If you want something different, you have to do something different. Helping people experiencing homelessness get the resources, housing and treatment they need isn't a mystery. We know how to do this. What we are lacking is a coordinated effort to bring together our resources to rapidly triage, assess and provide help to the over 10,000 men, women and children living unhoused in our San Diego region. Sunbreak Ranch is a well-thought through concept for providing a safe, temporary place for those living in encampments across our region to relocate to where they can have their basic needs met AND be surrounded by all the services they need in one place. Let's get smart about this San Diego and build Sunbreak Ranch ASAP. Humans are suffering right now, scared for their lives and perishing on our streets. Here's what we need to do: 1. Secure a piece of land in San Diego County that is centrally located (mid-county) and offers space for SunBreak Ranch. 2. Raise funds to cover the construction of SunBreak Ranch and operating/maintenance expenses for 2 years to start (Reach out to SunBreak Ranch leadership for the amount they need). 3. Build the site. 4. Open it up for those experiencing homelessness. 5. Provide triage services, temporary housing and a safe, dignified community for these individuals and families to rest, heal, rebuild trust and discover a path for their life off the streets. 6. Help these individuals find jobs, healthcare services, education, long-term care or another path based on their individual circumstances. 7. Provide compassionate, healing support and inspiration. This weekend, we celebrate Veterans Day, a day to honor and thank the brave men and women who have served our country in the armed forces. We owe them a debt of gratitude for their sacrifices and contributions to our freedom and security.   But as we celebrate, let us also remember that not all veterans are living the life they deserve. According to the latest data from the Department of Veterans Affairs, there were 37,252 veterans experiencing homelessness in the U.S. in 2020. That means that on any given night, one out of every ten homeless adults is a veteran. Other estimates suggest that there are over 100,000 homeless veterans.   Homeless veterans face many challenges, such as physical and mental health issues, substance abuse, unemployment, and lack of social support. Fortunately, there are programs and resources available to help homeless veterans find housing, health care, employment, and other services. The VA, HUD, and other federal and local agencies have been working together to end veteran homelessness providing permanent housing to veterans without preconditions or barriers to entry. Tragically, in certain markets as much as 76% of veterans returned to homelessness within 6 months of entering these government programs.    This failure to help our veterans led to the formation of Beds4Vets, www.beds4vets.org, which provides transitioning veterans with the essential furnishings that transform an empty apartment into a home. Since 2018, Beds4Vets has helped over 100 veterans and their families, with 100% of assisted veterans staying off the street. From a 76% failure rate to 100% success, Beds4Vets has been a model of how private/public partnerships can transform failed government programs. Beds4Vets is a 100% volunteer, 100% privately funded non-profit, and as such, donors can feel confident that their tax-deductible gift goes directly to veterans in need. It is an honor to be affiliated with such an organization. This Veteran’s Day, I encourage you to honor our veterans by making a gift on their website, www.beds4vets.org. But we can also do our part as individuals and communities to support homeless veterans. Here are some ways you can help: 1) Donate to or volunteer with organizations that provide assistance to homeless veterans, such as Beds4Vets. 2) If you encounter a veteran who is homeless or at risk of becoming homeless, call the National Call Center for Homeless Veterans at (877) 4AID-VET (877-424-3838) for assistance. On this Veterans Day, let us honor our veterans not only with words, but with actions. Let us show them that we care and that we are grateful for their service. Let us work together to ensure that every veteran has a place to call home.

Arlington Achieves Functional Zero for Veteran Homelessness! In January 2015, Arlington joined forces with 74 other communities nationwide, firmly committing to end Veteran homelessness. Fast forward one year and the collective efforts of PathForward and the County have paid off, as we successfully moved 20 homeless Veterans from the streets and shelters into permanent, stable housing. While there may still be homeless Veterans in our community, we have made remarkable progress in our mission to combat this pressing issue. "Functional zero" means that Veteran homelessness occurs rarely, for a short time, and typically, it does not recur. It signifies that we have created a support system and pathways to ensure that our heroes have access to safe and secure housing. If there’s one thing we know about Tulsans, it’s that we show up for each other. Homelessness is a community-wide issue and will require community-based solutions to solve it. The work that A Way Home for Tulsa partner agencies are doing is working to get Tulsans housed, but more of that work is needed, requiring more resources and community commitment to address this critical issue. End homelessness in America. We believe ending homelessness in America begins with a sandwich. Our goal, beyond simply providing a PB&J sandwich to those in need, is to acknowledge and recognize the often overlooked homeless individuals and families in our community. When you see those experiencing homeless, one of the questions you may ask yourself is, “What more can I do?” We pray that what begins with a PB&J sandwich grows into much more for those who serve. In small ways, each of us can address homelessness in America. And together, we can end it. Our approach covers three initiatives to fulfill our vision: Educate Advocate Allocate Education represents increasing public awareness. Advocate is increasing support to not only host a PB&J Day, but to seek policy change and expanded community support to develop solutions. Allocate is the giving of our time, talent, and treasure (physical or monetary resources) to support PB&J Days and beyond. Yesterday the 100 in 100 initiative was launched in Grand Rapids. “An effort to house 100 individuals who are experiencing homelessness in 100 days with an intentional focus on chronic homelessness.” So encouraging to see this private/public partnership. Homelessness is a community-wide problem, and the entire community needs to be part of the solution.
