After City of Rochester , Ville de Paris 🧐😉 How remove an inner loop like a « périphérique » ? "When we were talking about this project a decade ago, it was in economic terms, pure benefit cost: Remove this highway, generate investment, benefits outweigh the costs by more than 2-to-1." Now, the conversation is "much more socially oriented. What impacts have these highways had on communities? What can be done to reverse that? How do we heal wounds and restore trust?" On top of a $75 million, 90,000-square-foot museum expansion completed last summer, 238 apartments, over 100 of which are for people making between 60% to 80% area median income, and 126-room Hampton Inn by Hilton hotel. A vibrant downtown is a positive reflection of the surrounding city — it leaves a lasting impression on those choosing to visit, to live, to stay, and to contribute to the future of the region. As Sacramento continues its evolution towards an intensely mixed-use mosaic at its center — the same formula which serves thriving cities around the world — we must lead with the premise that building a desirable, attainable, and truly LIVABLE urban neighborhood at our heart will be foundational to the success of California's capital region and to the long-term sustainability of our community. Over the past year, Downtown Sacramento Partnership teamed up with 2023 State of Downtown keynote speaker Brent Toderian to observe conditions in the downtown Sacramento market, facilitate dialogue with a multidisciplinary group of residents, housing creators, urban livability skeptics, and regulatory experts from near and far. The themes which emerged have taken form in the Downtown Sacramento Livability Strategy which highlights the significant progress being made in Sacramento (California's first pro-housing designated jurisdiction), and emphasizes areas where we must do more if we are going to dramatically increase efficient, centrally-located housing opportunities and build a destination of choice for current and future downtown residents. This is not a report, or a study... we have plenty of those already. It’s a strategy that compliments, and intends to add gravity to, existing plans such as Sacramento’s 2040 General Plan and Central City Specific Plan. This is a mindset shift to where downtowns must be if we want to open the floodgates of housing production — meeting the fundamental need we currently fall short on — and embracing a more resilient model for social wellness and civic, environmental, and economic sustainability through the creation of truly livable central neighborhoods.

Yesterday's critical decision session created ripples around the city, sparking conversations on future development plans for the South Side. The movements and steps we see being taken today lay the groundwork for the area's transformation. - Predictions and Consequences Considering the potential scenarios arising from this vote, a central theme emerges: Curb urban sprawl while instilling a sense of rejuvenation in long-neglected parts of the city. If the proposed plan gets the needed approvals, South Side may witness an influx of new and innovative development, which could: • Ignite economic growth via business opportunities • Encourage community inclusivity and diversity • Enhances the lifestyle standards However, in providing forth these developments, one must factor in challenging aspects such as potential gentrification, rising property prices, and strain on public resources that often accompany urban transformations. The city inevitably faces a delicate balancing act of innovation and growth, incorporated with preservation and inclusivity. - Analytical Viewpoint A strategic analysis of these upcoming changes requests an understanding of South Side's historical context. The transformation planned could either lead to an enhanced, vibrant neighborhood that retains its rich history or cause displacement due to high property and living cost. The city’s decision not only shapes the urban landscape but molds the lives of current and future South Side residents. It is equally interesting and essential to witness how local authorities will mitigate gentrification effects such as displacement and a potential higher cost of living. - Concluding Thoughts Whatever the outcome may be, this upcoming decision signifies a crucial moment, paving the way for the South Side’s future. An economically vibrant, diverse, and inclusive South Side will send a clear message – every part of the city matters. As we approach decision-time, let's hope that the path chosen ensures the creation of liveable spaces experiencing the city's cycles of growth and development. Finally, our thoughts remain with the residents of South Side – the true stakeholders behind these changes. They are the ones who will tie together the past and future, stitching together the neighborhood's new narrative as decision-makers redefine its skyline. #SouthSideDevelopment #UrbanPlanning #CityGrowth #InclusiveDevelopment

Just a quick note to highlight the importance of optimizing space for pedestrian movement in our urban planning efforts. Streets are more than just pathways; they're the lifelines of a city. Let's keep this in mind as we work towards enhancing walkability and accessibility in our city streets.

A timely and sad account that illustrates how fragile urban ecosystems are and how much the general retreat from cities during COVID accelerated the decline of office work and changed the fate of many cities across the U.S. You see similar patterns in the descent of Seattle, Portland, San Francisco and many other urban areas. As an urban planner by education, I see the many small factors required to make a vibrant urban area such as business diversity, accessibility, safety (even if just perceived), etc.
