A timely and sad account that illustrates how fragile urban ecosystems are and how much the general retreat from cities during COVID accelerated the decline of office work and changed the fate of many cities across the U.S. You see similar patterns in the descent of Seattle, Portland, San Francisco and many other urban areas. As an urban planner by education, I see the many small factors required to make a vibrant urban area such as business diversity, accessibility, safety (even if just perceived), etc.

After City of Rochester , Ville de Paris 🧐😉 How remove an inner loop like a « périphérique » ? "When we were talking about this project a decade ago, it was in economic terms, pure benefit cost: Remove this highway, generate investment, benefits outweigh the costs by more than 2-to-1." Now, the conversation is "much more socially oriented. What impacts have these highways had on communities? What can be done to reverse that? How do we heal wounds and restore trust?" On top of a $75 million, 90,000-square-foot museum expansion completed last summer, 238 apartments, over 100 of which are for people making between 60% to 80% area median income, and 126-room Hampton Inn by Hilton hotel. It’s critical that city leaders and decision makers understand that sacrificing a few parking spaces for increased safety and multi-modality can greatly benefit surrounding businesses. Especially when attention is given to providing quality urban design and streetscaping. Drawing more activity, helping to slow traffic, encouraging comfort and a tendency to linger, and providing a greater sense of place; all can help boost activity in an area and the surrounding shops.
Is your community at odds over the implementation of a Complete Streets or bike lane project that may reduce parking? A gut reaction may lead small businesses to believe that streetscape improvements will negatively impact sales. But is that true? New research shows that small businesses along a commercial corridor see an increase in sales (or no change) after the installation of bike lanes. Studies like this, and many others, can help local leaders assuage fears and anxiety about bike lanes to focus on outcomes that benefit all: increased safety, lower carbon emissions, and better economic output. Our President and CEO Erin Barnes created this video sharing the vibrant multimodal infrastructure of her local Main Street. Read the latest research here: https://bit.ly/3zWYhpI
