🏗️ Thanks to Rider Levett Bucknall RLB for providing statistics on the RLB Crane index®️ (Link in the comments) 💻 Overall, #Melbourne saw net crane increases in the civil sector (up 15), data centres (up five), civic (up four), mixed use (up three), commercial (up one), aged care (up one) and education (up one). This reflects the continued public works activity that has been fuelling the engineering sector for the past few years. Some of these projects include the Westgate Tunnel, North-East Link, Level Crossing Removals, and the Metro Tunnel project, all of which are all contributing to a record number of civil cranes. The current number of 47 civil cranes is above the previous sector high of 32 cranes in Q1 2024. A decline in net crane numbers was seen in residential (down 27) and hotel (down one). The residential sector currently accounts for 41% of all cranes in Melbourne, while the civil sector accounts for 24%. Across the city’s six main regions, increases in crane numbers were only seen in the east and north, increasing by five and 26 respectively. No net change was recorded in the inner or Geelong regions. All other regions saw crane numbers decrease. Crane numbers show second highest rate on record Vanessa Rader | Head of Research | Ray White Group The RLB Crane Index has been released for Q1 2024 and is showing stable yet high results in crane numbers across both residential and non-residential property types. The current national index of 204 is the second highest rate recorded since the survey's inception in 2015 and represents 869 cranes, with 540 representing residential projects and 329 across commercial asset types. The high signals a rebound in confidence for construction across the country with urgency surrounding residential and mixed-use developments moving ahead of other non-residential developments. Civil projects also feature highly with investment into infrastructure across the country, however, many commercial projects are coming to an end and limited new developments are in the pipeline until occupancy levels improve. The UK’s £1.36 billion Trans-Pennine A66 #road upgrade project has been given #development consent by the #UK Government. The work will see the A66 Northern Trans-Pennine stretch being upgraded and widened to dual carriageway status. The firms Balfour Beatty plc, Kier Group and Keltbray have the respective contracts for the work and have to receive final approvals before starting the #construction work. The #project involves improving a 29km stretch of the A66 as well as a number of junctions, including those with the M6 J40 and the A1 at Scotch Corner. Improving the road will deliver a better #transport route between the North East and North West of England. The A66 is an important route and carries a high percentage of heavy #vehicles, with the existing lane in either direction being unable to cope with demand.

Denver International Airport (DIA, KDEN) opened 28 years ago in 1995 and is the largest airport in the Western Hemisphere and the second largest on Earth. Also being one of the busiest airports in the entire world, there is a constant need to repair, replace, and upgrade the airport. Unlike most construction projects, it is impossible to simply “shut down” the airport for any duration of time, so construction projects are always ongoing concurrently with airport operations. Typically, the first stage of any new project in an existing structure starts with demolishing the old out to make room for the new. Based on the latest crane data it looks like construction activity in Australia is starting to rebound. In Q1-2024 the RLB Crane Index was at its second highest level since the index commenced in 2015 with 869 cranes recorded (540 on residential projects and 329 on commercial asset types). The greatest number of cranes were located in Greater Sydney with 402 cranes across the skyline, followed by Melbourne and Queensland. There has been a significant amount of press recently that new housing starts in 2023 were at the lowest level in over a decade. Perhaps the number of cranes is an early indicator that this is starting to turn around.
