Today, the Senedd passed Mark Isherwood MS' BSL (Wales) Bill with 24 in favour, 3 abstentions and 16 against. To those who were against it, here are six reasons to support a #BSLWalesBill. 1. Scotland and England have BSL legislation in place, Northern Ireland are on their way there. This will make Wales the only UK nation not to have BSL legislation. #BSLWalesBill 2. Little co-production with deaf BSL signers and we have felt excluded, several deaf Welsh BSL signers have commented on this. The Disability Rights Taskforce did not mention BSL once (from a FOI request). Where was the involvement of BSL signers? #BSLWalesBill 3. If the government is so keen on co-production, listen to deaf people. The BDA report has already stated that there needs to be BSL legislation in Wales. By ignoring this and stating you won't legislate because of "co-production" is not co-production. #BSLWalesBill 4. Whilst the Wellbeing and Future Generations Act is in place, due to language and cultural barriers plus public servant knowledge, deaf people are left out of this process. There is no specific consideration for BSL. #BSLWalesBill 5. Whilst we are happy with the inclusion of BSL in the Curriculum for Wales, this just covers children in education. Deaf people exist outside schools too and wellbeing needs to be holistic. 6. Deaf people have been pressing for BSL legislation in Wales for 20 years. Our lives should not be along party political lines and we matter. We've waited long enough. #BSLWalesBill

The CDC reports that 26% of adults have a disability, making up the largest minority group in the United States. It's likely that you’ve encountered or worked with many individuals who identify as having a disability. Disability language etiquette is necessary in order to create a more inclusive environment for everyone. A change you can make right away is removing ableist language from your vocabulary. You can replace the ableist phrase "time blindness" with "misperception of time" and "tone deaf" with "inconsiderate" or "unable to read the room." Video description: 0:00-0:04: A view of a desk with a laptop, mug, and pencils with the words: "Ableist phrases to remove from your vocabulary" and The How Skills logo. 0:04- 0:11: An overhead view of an open dictionary and a coffee mug on a blanket. "Instead of 'Time Blindness'" appears on the screen. "Time Blindness" is crossed out and arrows appear pointing down to "misperception of time" 0:12- 0:19: An overhead view of an open dictionary and a coffee mug on a blanket. The foremost limitation of an effective implementation of basic rights of disabled persons is the non recognition of disabled as a person in the society , they have been marginalized in absence of sensitive authorities responsible for implementation of Rights of Persons With Disability Act. For e.g. Railway police confiscating the Aadhar UID ID of Deaf persons and never return it back, Railway authority not ensuring disabled friendly procedures so that concession certificate is issued to the needy deaf person, employers exploiting deaf persons because they believe in "deaf culture" not word culture, Deaf person has been disrespected during interview for a Govt post , the Selection Board asking deaf person to speak before the Board after knowing it that he is under Disability Quota and he has mentioned in his application as Deaf person with Dr report. These are some of "many" such evil practises taking place in the society and perpetrated by authorities too. How far we are together fighting this evil !! #disabilityrights #rpwdact #deafcommunity #deafawareness #deafculture #constitutionalrights #fundamentalrightsofdisabledperson https://lnkd.in/g4pQPdvj
Despite existing laws, why do persons with disabilities still fight for basic rights? Dr Seema Lal and Suchitra Narayan

Excuse me, is this 🎙 on? Today marks the 34th anniversary of signing the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). This landmark civil rights law, enacted on July 26, 1990, prohibits #discrimination against individuals with disabilities in all areas of public life, including jobs, schools, transportation, and all public and private places open to the general public. I've lived longer than people with #disabilities have had legally protected rights. Let that sink in if you were born before 1990. While the ADA was a significant milestone, it’s essential to recognize that the fight for equal access and opportunities continues. The unemployment rate for people with disabilities is still more than double that of non-disabled individuals, and many public and private spaces remain inaccessible. Today is a celebration, but it also serves as a reminder of the work that still needs to be done. Honor this day by committing to furthering progress and ensuring that all individuals, regardless of their abilities, have the chance to thrive. #ADA34 #DisabilityRights #Inclusion #Accessibility #Advocacy

It's a shame we in the UK do not mark or celebrate the 40th anniversary of our 1974 "Health and Safety at Work Act" and, in fact, other than being killed at work, sort of, expediently attempt to ignore employees occupational health regardless of continuously up-dating regulations and legislation ever since. Particularly when Future Horizons of a 21st Digital Century or transition to the 4.0 Industrial Revolution started to dawn on governments who started to run Future Scenario Building Think Tanks resulting in the HSE Research Report 600... https://lnkd.in/eYNT8gJn Amazingly accurate as it predicted the 2017 "Hourglass Economy of Haves and Have-nots" without knowing there would be a financial crash in 2008 followed by the COVID epidemic a decade later throwing another unforeseen spanner in the works of government. I suppose 40 years is but a blink of the eye in the scale of things but, when they started calling us "Human Resources" there was a glimmer of hope that in my life-time there maybe a change in valuing their Human Resources from cradle to the grave but, no such luck regardless of, so called "Professional PC Ideology" as the chasm remains with "Personal Ideologies" still represented in their bias. Probably still too early to celebrate Orwell's 1984 as a non-event as still time to find ourselves in a Dystopian Future. #PublicHealth #DigitalEyeHealth #OccupationalHealth

"historically, society has tended to isolate and segregate individuals with disabilities, and, despite some improvements, such forms of discrimination against individuals with disabilities continue to be a serious and pervasive social problem" (Findings of Congress, #ADA, 1990) My daughter turned 21 last week. She saw me celebrate her, and I kept the crushing concern for her future buried deep within. One more year of school. One more year of friends, activity, a sense of purpose, or anyone but mom and home. Her waiver serves thousands well, but not people like her. For her it provides no staffed services, discriminating against her for symptoms of her disability -- behaviors. We hear it all across the nation, waiver providers comfortably discriminating against people with profound #IDD, autism, and related disorders because they have symptoms of #behavior. With no staff willing to service her, in a state that has eliminated 14c, on a waiver that does not allow day programs, someone please tell me what is the pathway to fulfill the integration mandate and ensure she can access her community, attend any of her many specialty care appointments, have meaningful daily activity, build friendships, learn skills, and enjoy a life she chooses? How? What's my story? It's that for some individuals nothing has changed but the buildings in 34 years. #Segregation and #isolation continue to be a pervasive problem, and they will remain so as long as waiver administrators and states are permitted to treat behaviors as a nefarious choice and not the debilitating involuntary symptom of disability it is for people like my daughter with #SynGAP1 and #profoundautism. #Biopsychosocial models are needed. The White House may have proclaimed "acceptance" this April, but we have yet to see that in her more than two decades. What she gets is a never-ending cycle of overt discrimination. This is the crisis very few even want to acknowledge -- other than the myriads of families living it nationwide. They can't look away. They're living it.

Let's dive into a topic that often sparks debate: disability language. We're all on a quest to find the right words when discussing disabilities and disabled individuals. It's a challenge, but here are some valuable guidelines to help you navigate the conversation: 👉🏻 Avoid Insulting Terms - Recognize and stop using derogatory language related to disabilities. 👉🏻 Be Factual and Respectful - Aim for descriptions that are accurate and respectful, avoiding condescending or sentimental terms. 👉🏻 Respect Individual Preferences - Each person’s language preference is paramount. Pay attention to how individuals refer to their own disabilities. 👉🏻 Listen to the Disabled Community - Understand the evolving language within the disability community and adapt your language accordingly. As language evolves, so does our understanding of disability. Navigating disability language isn't about perfection, but about respect, understanding, and continual learning. #DisabilityLanguage #RespectfulDialogue #InclusionMatters #OptimismInDisability #WamplerAdvocacy #DisabilityEducation #CompassionForAll #TheWamplerFoundation #Diversity #Inclusion #StephenJWamplerFoundation
