Scope have a really interesting 'social model of disability' which explains thing really succinctly, we think: “People are disabled by barriers in society, not by their impairment or difference. Barriers can be physical, like buildings not having accessible toilets. It's what drives innovation, the courage to conquer obstacles, and the spirit to celebrate every victory, no matter how big or small. People with disabilities aren't limited by their challenges, they're defined by their incredible resilience. They show us that potential isn't limited by a diagnosis, it just unfolds in a different way. Let's all harness the power of self-belief! How can we help a person in a #wheelchair? The term ‘wheelchair-bound’ is commonly met with sympathy, as people assume that a person in a wheelchair is one who needs constant help and support to get by. However, the truth is that #PeopleWithDisabilities often do not need our assistance and are perfectly capable of managing on their own. In many ways, the wheelchair enables their sense of independence, allowing them to live without constant “help and support” from able-bodied bystanders. Day 19 of our ‘21 Days of Disability Awareness’ campaign features Soumita Basu, Founder of Zyenika Inclusive Fashion, who shares her experience of the assumptions people make just because she is a wheelchair user. The first step to breaking free from these stereotypes and misconceptions is #awareness. Let’s work together to build a more #inclusive world where #accessibility is the norm, not the exception. As we step into a new year, Team Humanly is fuelled with excitement and a deep commitment to continuing to champion what it means to be ‘human in human services’. Ever felt helpless? That, in other words can be called.. a disability in my words. Given emotional support and empathy can help a person get back on their feet. Being kind to everyone makes us human. Given a ramp, a wheelchair user can climb floors. This also helps people carrying baby strollers and those who may have injured foot/leg. Given closed captions and sign language in all videos makes it accessible to DHH (Deaf and Hard of Hearing) individuals. This also helps those who could not understand a certain word in the conversation or want to watch a movie without disturbing others (on mute). Given audio description can make a movie more enjoyable for BLV (Blind and Low vision) individuals. This also helps those who are not looking at screen but still want to know what is happening on the screen. (Try this). When someone asks me what is accessibility, I always say: "Accessibility is a requirement. It is not a feature." TW: Ableism I found this week's Loose Women discussion on ITV around wheelchair use really upsetting. A show with that high level profile simply shouldn’t be framing wheelchair use as something shameful, or some sort of failure on the part of disabled people. A show that so often has the wonderful Sophie Morgan as a panelist should definitely know better and she’s done a wonderful job of calling them out. As someone with very fluctuating symptoms who increasingly uses a chair for events, watching Nicholas Hamilton’s recent interview was essentially watching someone voice all of my insecurities and internalised ableism that I’ve grappled with overcoming for years, and seeing them get applauded and praised for it… But for me, beyond those internal worries, getting a wheelchair has been such a positive thing. It’s allowed me to go to (and stay for longer at) events I would otherwise have avoided and helped me to manage my symptoms and avoid some of the heavy crashes I used to experience after trips. It isn’t a sign of failure at all, it’s me taking control back and breaking down some of the barriers that an inaccessible society throws at me. So just to say to everyone who is also grappling with these thoughts on a daily basis…  🧑🦽Your disability is not something you have to ‘overcome’.  👨🦽You are not failing for using mobility aids.  👩🦽You do not need to abandon your mobility aids to be loved! Please do not let anybody make you feel any other way about it! 💜 I have a lot more thoughts on what is a complicated and emotive topic, but will leave it there for now… Please be kind, it’s about challenging an ableist society and media rather than targeting any individuals, and using our platforms for positive change.
