G7 to compete with China for rare earth metals. Western countries are creating a group on rare minerals to mine rare earth metals in developing countries themselves. The EU and other Western countries are creating a new form of financing for the development of minerals in order to stop depending on Chinese supplies in this area, writes the FT. The Mineral Supply Partnership (MSP) is seeking to attract banks such as BlackRock, Goldman Sachs, Citigroup, Rio Tinto and Anglo American to this work. According to the IEA, Chinese businesses currently control about 60% of the world's rare earth metals market, and Beijing's share in their processing reaches 90%. At the same time, it is obvious that Western countries are not going to develop this processing and mining on their territories. This is due to environmental problems; they will try to enter the territory of other countries with dirty production.
