Question: What is the “social expectation” of a #widow?
(I googled it)
“When a woman’s value is contingent on having a spouse, #widowhood can force women out of familial and social structures, leaving them particularly vulnerable to #poverty, #isolation, and #violence. These challenges may be compounded by struggles that widows face on account of other intersecting identities: as Black and Indigenous women, members of LGBTQI+ communities, women affected by conflict, women with disabilities, women of young and older ages, women living in poverty or rural areas, and other marginalized identities.”
THIS topic will be included in our virtual 2024 Widow Empowerment Event - Saturday | Sept. 28 11-5pm ET. Widow educational webinars are vital to raise awareness and the voices of these beautiful women.

A day to honor mothers has existed for as long as, well, there have been mothers. Festivals honoring mothers in ancient times were often tied to gods and goddesses and maternal symbols of fertility, birth, creativity, and cycles of growth. The mother is the protector and nourisher of children and, by extension, of all humanity.

International Mother’s Day is a celebration of mothers and the mothering instinct we see in females
Mother, sisters, wives, girlfriends, and fiancees…what would we ever do without them? Society owes a great debt to the women of the world, especially mothers who made us chicken soup when we were sick as children, or the sisters who have mothered their siblings on a short or long term basis
Mothers are the influential nurturing force in our upbringing. Often they are also wives who somehow manage to juggle both a career and a family. They often make sacrifices for the greater good.
Across history mothers have been tireless in their fight for women’s rights while working for a kinder more peaceful society. Many have gone on to adopt children too.
On this day that celebrates the contributions of mothers to the world, Digital Samurai rejoices in the opportunities technology can bring us to communicate special messages of appreciation to mothers across the world.
We work with disadvantaged youth and mothers in Africa. The world needs the resilience of African women, their commitment to their children, the persistence and grit they show every day as they raise their sons and daughters. African women can be proud knowing their contribution to the world has only just begun!
Mother’s Day is all about celebrating mothers and showing them how much we love, respect and value them.
There are many ways to show your appreciation for mothers, whether it be flowers, spending the day with them, cooking a meal for them, or sending them a video montage and message of appreciation if you live further afield.
What are you grateful to your mum for? How will you communicate that? Make your mother feel special and appreciated today.
#MothersDay#CelebrateMothers
Date: June 20
Time: 4pm – 5pm
Location: TFS Office
Event Overview:
To commemorate the Pride Month, we are hosting a special panel discussion featuring parents of LGBTQIA+ children. This event aims to create a supportive and an inclusive environment where parents can share their experiences, challenges, and joys of raising LGBTQIA+ children and what the society can do to make this journey an easy one.
Objectives:
- To foster understanding and empathy within our community.
- To provide a platform for parents to voice their stories and insights.
- To discuss the importance of support systems for both LGBTQIA+ individuals and their families.
- To address common misconceptions and educate attendees on LGBTQIA+ issues.
- To create an inclusive community.
Reproductive Rights vs Reproductive Justice
These terms are often used interchangeably, but they are not the same.
I spoke with an audience of advocates and funders in Northern California aiming to facilitate a shift in the understanding of what access to abortion means to communities already struggling to make ends meet and who regularly face barriers to health care in general.
The status quo reproductive rights movement and emphasis on "choices" erases the lived experiences of oppressed people where choices don't matter without the ability to execute once a decision is made.
Reproductive justice takes the next step in analyzing the conditions of our communities and our government to meet the needs of individuals and families wherever they are in their reproductive journeys. It takes us away from a singular focus on abortion and allows for intersectional advocacy and movement building.
Let me know your thoughts in the comments.

At a recent event to launch Tides Foundation’s Just Health Fund, DeShawn Taylor, MD spoke about what it means to provide care through a reproductive justice lens: “It’s centering the most marginalized people—people of color, people struggling to make ends meet, Black people, Indigenous people, immigrants, disabled people, queer, lesbian, nonbinary, trans, people in rural areas—but also giving them the tools that they need to be their own advocates and truly participate in their care, understanding that they are the moral authorities over their lives.”

The text from the images is copied below, in case this is easier for you to read.
The same text is in the alt text field, for screen readers, along with a description of the images.
Would you like to help to shape the future of Sisters of Frida?
Sisters of Frida: we are a collective of disabled women and non-binary people.
We are looking to work with disabled women and non-binary people.
Non-Binary: this means you don’t see gender as being a man or a woman. For example, you might see yourself as neither a man or a woman. Or, you might be a mix of both.
We are unique and experimental. This means we want a new way of working with different networks. This is to share experiences and support.
We want to build up different networks. We want to build networks in communities that are led by Disabled people.
We want to build networks in communities that are feminist.
Feminist: this means pushing for women to have equal rights.
We are hiring Disabled women and non-binary people.
We welcome applications from:
• Women and non-binary people who are marginalised in more than one way. For example, disabled refugees and migrants.
Marginalised people: here, this means people who are often treated as if they are not important in society, even though they are.
We would like up to 60% of the steering group to be made up of Black People and People of Colour.
This means Black People and People of Colour who are also women or non-binary.
At the moment, we are based in London. But we welcome people from outside of London to apply.
Events and meetings will mostly take place in London. Or, they will be a mixture of in-person and online meetings.

NONPROFIT LEADERS!
If your efforts have been impacted by political attacks, we want to hear from you. Since the US Supreme Court rejected the use of affirmative action in higher education, its ripple effects have spread across various sectors on programs for racial equity and justice. Simultaneously, communities around the country are facing restrictions related to reproductive choices, LGBTQIA+ rights, immigration, and other issues, but there is NO DATA on what is happening to nonprofits as a result.
Fill out our short survey to help us understand how nonprofits are navigating these challenges and shaping their responses. Your insights will guide recommendations for both nonprofits and funders.
