Thank you Stephen Moret from Strada and Matt Sigelman at The Burning Glass Institute for your research on underemployed college graduates. In Orange County California, we sit at about 20% underemployed but that is research from the universities themselves. I wonder if Strada and Burning Glass did research here, the statistics might be more in line with the 50% range they quote for the country at large? I'd curious to ask that question. Three things our three major universities, UC Irvine. Chapman University, and California State University, Fullerton can do better: 1. More links to internships with companies - this must be completely rethought for high level impact. 2. More early career guidance for students. The ratio of career guidance professionals to students is abysmal and needs a new strategy for investment. 3. Deeper partnerships with business to insure first time hires secure a solid entry level position. The education community can educate business to not always ask for experience but to train for experience and invest in the long term growth of an individual.

The latest report from Strada Education Foundation and The Burning Glass Institute shines a light on alarming underemployment stats for college graduates 🔦 On average, 45% of college graduates are underemployed within 5 years of graduating 🎓 The chart below shows the rates by area of study. It adds fuel to the fire for rhetoric about the underwhelming ROI of a college degree, including for in-demand majors 😱 There's a secondary access gap in #highered that isn't often talked about. The first is getting into college. The second is learning how to translate your degree into a career, which happens through internships 💼 , mentorship 🤝, and real world coursework 🌎. That's why we're so passionate about about closing the gap and creating pathways to fulfilling employment for every student ↗

Meet Senior, Isabelle Artnak! Isabelle is a Supply Chain Management major and Finance minor from Plano, Texas. On campus she is involved with Women in Finance as the treasurer, Model United Nations as the treasurer, is an Honors College Ambassador, and a member of WISE (Women Impacting Supply Chain Excellence). She also interned through the Office of Entrepreneurship and Innovation in the Venture Innovation Program, and studied abroad in Italy. Upon graduation, she will begin a full-time role at Texas Instruments . How have your various internships and campus involvement enhance your Walton experience? Learning in the corporate environment has been pivotal throughout my Walton experience. The ability to apply classroom theories and knowledge to actual scenarios provides a mutually benefits to both my academic and professional career. Campus involvement has been instrumental as I have been able to help other business students directly and develop my leadership skills simultaneously. What advice do you have for younger students? "Learn to fail forward" -Reba McDermott. College is about trying new things, making new friends, all the while finding yourself. Approach college with a mindset of growth as the ultimate goal, not success. Success is a byproduct of growth. Favorite WCOB class? Even though I am really not great at accounting, my favorite class was Managerial Accounting as I learned about how to analyze numbers and apply that to operational efficiency. Currently, I'm in the Supply Chain Leadership Colloquium class with Dr. Donnie Williams. I'm really enjoying it, as it takes more of an introspective approach to building a strong foundation for your career. What is a Walton resource you have used and benefited from? I use the Business Communication Lab quite often to look over my essays for grants, applications, and other writing assignments. I really have loved participating in the SCM Shadow Days where you have the opportunity to tour various corporate offices. #WaltonCollege #UARK

🎓 Reflecting on His Time at OHIO: A Message to Future Leaders 🎓 As a proud member of the Class of 1972, Marty Wall has had the privilege of watching the world evolve in incredible ways—especially in the opportunities available to today’s students. He is a supporter of the Political Science department here and has worked with many students in a career advising role, having the privilege of seeing them grow. Reflecting on his journey, from serving as a Resident Assistant at OHIO to his role as Executive Director at the Association of Schools and Colleges of Optometry, he has seen how foundational experiences can shape one’s path. Now, as an Executive and Career Coach in North Bethesda, Maryland, he wants to share a few lessons learned. During his time at OHIO, internships weren’t as common as they are today, but his experience as a Resident Assistant helped shape his understanding of leadership, conflict resolution, and mentoring—skills that remained with him throughout his career. He encourages students to value and enhance these and other soft skills. They are vital in today’s workplace and often develop outside the classroom—whether through student organizations or other on and off campus roles.s. To current and incoming political science students, here’s his advice: 🔑 Follow your passion. Don’t focus too much on the job title that awaits you after graduation. Instead, immerse yourself in the courses that excite you. 🔑 Get involved. Leadership and organizational skills are often honed in campus organizations. These experiences are invaluable. 🔑 Stay open-minded. You’ll likely discover career possibilities you haven't even considered yet. Be open to unexpected opportunities. 🔑 Pursue hands-on experiences. Internships and practical experiences will set you apart, helping you identify your strengths and giving you a competitive edge. 🔑 Enjoy the journey. Don’t forget to take in the learning experience—inside and outside the classroom. His final piece of advice: If you can communicate effectively, get along with people, and adapt, you’ll go far. He wishes the best to the next generation of OHIO students as they carve out their own paths. ✨ #OHIOAlumni #LeadershipAdvice #CareerJourney #FutureLeaders #CampusInvolvement #MentorshipMatters #LifelongLearning #AlumniSupport

Have you heard about STEAM Ahead? If not, the Northern Lakes Economic Symposium and Showcase is a great opportunity to learn about what this program has to offer. STEAM Ahead was created by the Michigan Economic Development Corporation as a rebrand of its successful program "STEM Forward". This rebrand broadens the type of internships that are eligible for the program's financial support. STEAM Ahead provides businesses with thousands of dollars to help pay interns doing quality work. This support helps businesses meet their immediate talent needs while building a pipeline of future employees. Avazeh Attari will be a speaker at the Northern Lakes Economic Symposium and Showcase, where she will share more about this program and its potential impact on our region. Back in college, my whole world crashed when my dream internship got cancelled at the last minute. Imagine landing your dream internship or externship, only to have it vanish before it even begins -- because the company didn't have the time or resource to support you any longer. 🕰️💔😢 That happened two decades ago during my undergrad experience at MIT, a pivotal moment that highlighted a glaring issue in our approach to professional development. With our recent name change to Extern, Inc. and re-branded website to extern dot com, it made sense to lay out Extern's vision for everyone more clearly in a multi-part series, titled "The Case for Inventing a New Form of Work Experience: the Externship." 🚀🌟 I start off with a breakdown of why the market desperately needs a new form of work experience: https://lnkd.in/g4EvWuzn (oh and that's a throwback photo from 2 decades ago of me working on a computer science problem set with some fraternity brothers.)
