I'm so excited to share my first post with all of you about something I'm truly passionate about—organ donation research! A huge shoutout to my coach, Anita Adefuye, MPA, for inspiring me to step out of my comfort zone and share my research and insights on this fascinating topic. Currently, I'm working on my Ph.D. research under the exceptional guidance of my supervisor, Prof. Justin Longo, at the Johnson Shoyama Graduate School of Public Policy. Together, we're exploring how the presumed consent policy can impact organ donation rates in a study titled "Public Policy Morality Issues and Behavioral Nudges: How the Policy System Talks About Presumed Consent Post-Mortem Organ Donations." Let's dive into the amazing field of organ transplantation! From the remarkable advancements in modern medicine to how it benefits people with conditions like diabetes, organ failure, and heart disease, organ transplants truly change lives. Despite these achievements, there's a global shortage of organs for transplants, with less than 10% of the demand being met. As Americans, this is a day when we come together to celebrate our independence and express our patriotism.  I hope we take a moment to remember that the freedoms we enjoy are not free, and we pause to honor the sacrifices of those who have fought for the freedom we hold so dear.  I also hope we stop for a minute today to pray for those in countries around the globe we don’t know freedom.      In the United States, most children with cancer and life-threatening blood disorders now survive their diseases. Through research and treatment, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital has helped make that progress possible.  But the outlook can be far less optimistic for children who live in other parts of the globe.  Worldwide, more than 90% of children with cancer live in low and middle-income countries.  Too many of those children lack access to adequate diagnosis and treatment. Most of them will die from their diseases, but that statistic is about to change.   St. Jude has launched an ambitious initiative to improve access to care for children with cancer and life-threatening blood diseases in every corner of the world.  Led by the Department of Global Pediatric Medicine, St. Jude Global will create a network of interactive institutions that will form a global alliance focused on reducing this gap worldwide.  The mission of St. Jude Global is to improve the survival rates of children with cancer and other catastrophic diseases worldwide through the sharing of knowledge, technology, and organizational skills.   I hope you saw the news about the cancer patients and family members from Gaza who were evacuated last week to our alliance partners.  Dr. Carlos Rodriguez-Galindo of St. Jude was interviewed on NBC Nightly News about the effort.  Working with the State Department and White House, the World Health Organization and governments of the region, ALSAC and St. Jude were able to help get this done – just as we have in other crisis zones recently like Syria and Ukraine.  It’s part of what Danny Thomas meant when he said, “No child should die in the dawn of life – no child, anywhere.”    #4thofjuly #independence #freedom #cancer #curecancer #childhoodcancer #childhood cancer awareness #fightcancer #fightcancertogether #philanthropy #fightchildhoodcancer #stjudegeorgia #stjudega #stjudechildrensresearchhospital #donate

Midwest Transplant Network celebrates the exceptional work of our friends at Gift of Life Michigan to reduce racial disparities in organ donation through education and advocacy. Black patients make up a disproportionately high percentage of Americans waiting for life-saving organ transplants, but a low percentage of registered donors due to longstanding inequities. Addressing this requires thoughtful, long-term public outreach that does not happen overnight, as described by Gift of Life Michigan CEO Dorrie Dils: “It's very, very grassroots. There is no ad campaign that's going to convince people. It's talking to people […] and getting their questions answered, hearing their stories. That happens one person at a time — in church basements, schools, at community events. Anywhere we can go where we can talk to people about organ and tissue donation, we attempt to be there." Thanks to their dedication, the percentage of diverse organ donors in Michigan grew from 23.9% in 2016 to 49.5% in 2023. One of the key challenges we face is the low donation rate among Hispanics. This disparity can be attributed, in part, to the persistence of various myths surrounding donation. These misconceptions act as significant barriers, preventing many Hispanics from registering as donors. Why finding the right bone marrow donor is so rare Think of it like searching for your perfect match, only it's way more complicated than swiping on dating apps! Medical Matchmaking: Our cells have special markers called HLAs. For a bone marrow transplant, we need a donor with super similar markers, or things get messy. 😬 Family Ties: Your best bet's usually a sibling, but even then, it's only a 25% chance of being a close match. Ethnicity Matters: Certain markers are more common in specific ethnic groups. A diverse donor pool is HUGE for increasing someone's odds. The Needle in the Haystack: Massive registries exist, but finding the right donor can still be tough, especially for those from underrepresented ethnic groups. But there's hope! Here's how to help: Join a registry: If you're healthy & 18-40, signing up might make you someone's lifesaver. Organizations like Be The Match make it easy. Here at The National Children’s Cancer Society (NCCS), we believe no family should go through childhood cancer alone. The NCCS focuses on the things that families need NOW, while their child is in treatment: • Travel-related expenses associated with treatment like gas, flights, and hotels. Because getting to their treatment is a priority. We spend about $62,000 each month to cover these costs for families! • Emergency financial assistance during long in-patient visits. This can assist with mortgage or rent, utilities, food, or any other household need. But our support goes even further: • Free publications and information during and after treatment. • College scholarships to childhood cancer survivors. • Worldwide support for childhood cancer patients: The Michele Hertlein Global Outreach Program partners with pharmaceutical companies to distribute donated cancer treatment drugs and medical supplies around the world. Australian Organ & Tissue Donation & Transplantation Authority - It's been 57 days since 2023 ended. During this time, Australia has been eagerly monitoring the declining trends in Organ Donation Consent rates. In 2018, 64% of Australian families granted the necessary consent for their loved ones to become Organ Donor Heroes. Before the emergence of COVID-19 in 2019, consent rates had already dropped by more than 2% to 61.7%, and in 2020, they fell further to just 58%. Then, Covid struck, and by 2022, the national rate had plummeted to only 53.9%. Despite the pandemic having ended some time ago, the OTA still attributes their failing strategy to the Australian people and the pandemic. Throughout this period, the one consistent factor besides declining rates has been the leadership of the OTA and the CEO's tenure. If the numbers indicate that fewer than 60% of Australians consented to organ donation, or if the Donations per million people is less than 20dpmp, or even if the registrations of Australians on the organ donation register did not increase by 10% compared to the previous year, the CEO should be called to step down!
