“Ingouvernable” has become the buzzword in France to describe the country after its chaotic snap election, which no party won. The specter of political deadlock threatens to paralyze the French administration and hit financial markets. The critical question that political analysts pose is whether the French political elites have political stamina to influence the coalition of parties. As none of the three political blocs won enough seats to form a government, parties have no choice but to start talking about forming alliances. That’s a rare exercise in French politics, where compromises with political opponents are usually denounced as betrayal. The major task for France’s new, fragmented political system is to identify an individual who could serve as prime minister and assemble a functioning government that will be able to pass laws in the National Assembly. Macron made clear that he would only appoint a prime minister backed by a “solid, necessarily plural” coalition, as he called for “calm and respectful” efforts to seek compromise.

Far-right, populist parties are set to see significant gains, as a rising tide of euroskepticism ripples through the European Union, with major implications for the bloc’s future policy agenda, legislation and broader foreign policy. “We are seeing a rise in populist sentiment both in Europe and globally, which might result in the most right-wing European Parliament in history,” @Tim Adams Adams, president and CEO of the Institute of International Finance, told CNBC via email. Let's be clear: The Left didn't win in France. It got, for sure, most seats, but the winner when it comes to votes and actual popular support is Le Pen's National Front - and WAY ahead of the left and Macron. What saved France was the electoral system. And this is similar to what happened in the UK, where Labour barely got 2% more of votes than last election, but Tories and Reform ended up disputing the same voters and the voting system helped saving UK from a wave of lunatics following Nigel Farage while torpedoed the Conservatives. In sum, both UK and France were saved by their electoral system and NOT by last minute voters trying to stop the far-right. At least that's not the full story. The fact is that the far-right is growing everywhere and unless the left and the centre-right can learn how to dialogue and put people first (and not the rich, big companies, etc), Le Pen will be there waiting besides Farage and other fascists all over Europe. Let's celebrate that the far-right didn't gt enough seats to form a government, but let's not pretend we won anything, the battle is just starting.
