Create new market spaces to make competition irrelevant. We love Alen Faljic’s post on the Blue Ocean Strategy, and his link to his article on running a design strategy sprint. The sprint includes two phases: business empathy (researching competitors, value chains, and cost drivers) and strategy design (creating and testing strategic choices). His article offers detailed steps for a week-long sprint, aiming to make strategic design accessible and collaborative. Here’s his link to the post and article: https://lnkd.in/gCGq8EHN Alen provides templates incorporating the Blue Ocean strategy canvas (developed by W. Chan Kim and @Renée Mauborgne). This canvas focuses on creating new market spaces, or "blue oceans," and emphasizes innovation to unlock new demand and make competition irrelevant by offering unique value. The Southwest Airlines chart example is excellent for visualizing industry factors and spotting differentiation opportunities. It aims to pursue uniqueness and low costs, creating new, uncontested market spaces for high growth and profitability. Helio can help you create differentiation by giving user insights to find and test new market ideas, helping companies innovate and stand out. #uxresearch #productdiscovery #marketresearch #productdesign

How can a UX leader have an impact on the direction of AI-powered product design in their companies when data science is not their core competency? I posted a 15 min highlight video of Kathryn Campbell today in the "Cre8: AI + UX" LinkedIn group (https://lnkd.in/esHufWd) walking the STRAT USA audience through several tips for bringing your strengths to the table to be a formative and generative influence on AI product design strategy. The title of her presentation was: "How UX Should Evolve to Responsibly Leverage AI." Kathryn has more than 15 years experience in UX research and digital strategy roles. She is currently Director of User Research at Warner Music Group. Before that, Kathryn led Integrity Research for Instagram, where she was responsible for user safety and the integrity of the AI and machine learning algorithms guiding feed ranking, search and recommendations. Kathryn is the kind of leader that I point to when I'm mentoring our team members on their respective design leadership paths. Kathryn will be returning to the STRAT stage (https://bit.ly/363Kg6F) in beautiful Boulder CO, September 9 - 11, 2024. Whether you're already attempting to integrate AI into your strategic design portfolio, or planning for the future, STRAT conferences are curated to give you practical ideas for future-proofing your career and team, while keeping your users at the center of the AI product design process. #ai #productdesign #leadership #conference

In Tom Chapman’s article, 'How Analogous Inspiration Can Solve Your Strategic Deadlock,' Alya Hazell, Research and Insight Lead at Designit, explores the concept of 'Analogous Inspiration.' Her words are a call to stakeholders during our current challenging economic times. Hazell insists “there is much value to be had in exploring the road less traveled and suggests the application of 'analogous inspiration,' an approach enabling businesses to flip tactics from diverse fields, reimagine strategies, and create innovative solutions.” This article reminded me of an inspiring and story-rich book I was recently reading called 'Range: Why Generalists Triumph in a Specialized World' by David Epstein. In essence, 'Range' encourages readers to embrace a more holistic approach to learning and development, suggesting that a broader range of experiences can lead to greater success and fulfillment in a world that often rewards specialization. A call for UX Designers: Embrace out of the box curiosity, draw inspiration from various domains for enhanced creativity and problem-solving. By fostering a mindset that values cross-disciplinary insights, we empower ourselves to create more innovative, and user-centric win-win solutions. Enjoy Chapman's well-written article and insightful, inspiring words from Hazell! #userexperience #userexperiencedesign

I just completed the IDEO U Human-Centered Systems Thinking course, and wow, what a ride! 🚀 This course was all about diving deep into the essence of #systemsthinking - a powerful way to solve complex problems by understanding how different parts of a system interact. 🌐 💡In a nutshell, systems thinking helps us see the big picture, not just the individual pieces. The course broke this down into four parts: Visualizing the System, Humanizing the System, Redesigning the System, and Envisioning the Future of the System. It was an eye-opener on approaching challenges holistically, ensuring solutions are sustainable, impactful, and, most importantly, centered around human needs. In today's complex world, understanding systems thinking is crucial. It's about making connections, anticipating consequences, and crafting solutions that benefit everyone. The future is systems thinking, and I'm here for it! #systemsthinking #innovation #changemakers #IDEO #complexsystems #design
