Shunning charities for having overhead and administrative expenses is like... ...expecting your phone to stay at 100% without plugging it in. ...complaining to a bakery for cooking your bread instead of serving raw dough. ...expecting your car to start on an empty tank. ...complaining that a cafe served tea made with boiled water rather than cold from the tap. ...expecting a fire without striking the match. No, not all non-profits are best using their resources to serve their beneficiaries and you're right to make credibility checks. But all non-profits need some form of fuel to run 🔥 Core costs may not be glamorous or exciting to fund...but small charities folding because they are being refused the basic resources they need to exist doesn't look good either. #nonprofits #corefunding #fundraising #trustsandfoundations #grants #charities

Such a fascinating debate on the funding of core costs for charities. What are your thoughts? Is the landscape of core cost funding changing for the better or worse? For me, core cost funding allows charities to breathe that little bit easier and focus on service delivery, rather than how the next bill is going to be paid or having to restrict services in any way so that those bills can be paid. I personally think there are *some* funders opening themselves up to the idea of broad, unrestricted funding, but there is still SUCH a long way to go. I am always trying to "find an angle", or almost create a project just to be eligible for funding form a certain trust/foundation. It would be such a relief to just demonstrate what our core costs are (which are always shown in our highly regulated and audited published accounts) and see what support can be obtained. #trustfundraising #corecosts #fundraising #charityfundraising #charity

I have 2 things for you to ponder: 1 - Last week I was helping welcome people to the Food Pantry for our Wednesday late afternoon/evening hours. In line were people who work in our community, coming after work to shop. I know this because they had uniforms and nametags from area businesses. Some had their kids with them, tired from a long day at school and/or day care. And everyone one of them depend on what is on these shelves to feed their families. 2 - Some of you might remember the panic you felt when you went to the grocery store early in the pandemic and found the thing that you needed unavailable. If you had to shop the food pantry and it was your only option because you were too short on cash from paying rent and all other life expenses to buy food and you got there and there wasn't much on the shelves - can you imagine the fear and panic? The good news is - that as a community - we can actually make it different. We can't change the dynamics that are causing people to need the pantry. (I don't have any tricks in my back pocket to change the economy, to change the housing shortage, to change the cost of day care or someone's income). But we can donate money to a food pantry or buy food to donate and fill shelves. That is in our collective power. I challenge you to to think of a way to make a difference today, and next week and the following week. Even if it's small, it will matter to someone. I found it encouraging to read the latest Donor Pulse report from Enthuse, for a few reasons: 🔆 More people are donating: 75% of people surveyed have donated to charities within the last three months, which is the highest figure since 2022. This is, of course, set against the difficult backdrop of the cost-of-living crisis and the report considers the ongoing impact. 🔆 Public trust: Charities were the most trusted institution by far, with 73% of people having a moderate or high trust in charities. This ties into concerns about 'fake news'. 48% of those surveyed don’t trust what they hear about charities in traditional media and 50% don’t trust what celebrities say about charities they support. In contrast, 73% of people trust what they see posted directly by charities. Hopefully this will offer charities confidence in putting their messages out there and engaging with supporters.

As we wrap up National Volunteer Week (April 21 – 27), it's important to recognize all the individuals who help charities through their generous donations of time.
