Over the past year, we’ve experienced an astonishing 112% increase in demand at the Oakland Food Pantry. Yes, you read that correctly. Four years after the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic, the question remains: what is driving this significant rise? Two years ago, we saw a surge in need following the reduction of SNAP benefits, but this past year, the impact has been compounded by other economic factors. The cost of living has skyrocketed, especially when it comes to groceries. In Pennsylvania, food prices have surged by an average of 8.2%. Consider the following: a gallon of milk now costs $4.56, a loaf of bread is priced at $3.21, eggs are nearing $4 a dozen, and chicken is approximately $5 per pound. Even for those who budget carefully, a week's worth of groceries for a family of four can easily surpass $100. The result? Supplemental services, like food pantries, have become a lifeline for more individuals than ever before. Food insecurity is no longer confined to the unemployed, elderly, or disabled—it’s affecting a much broader spectrum of people, many of whom were self-sufficient just two years ago. This growing need underscores the importance of community support during these challenging times, for this, I am so thankful for the work my team does every week at Community Human Services!

🌟 Celebrating the Legacy of the Black Panther Party's Free Breakfast Program🖤 In 1968, under the leadership of Bobby Seale and Huey P. Newton, the Black Panther Party initiated their groundbreaking Free Breakfast Program in West Oakland. What began modestly, serving 11 children on its inaugural day, quickly transformed into a vital lifeline for over 20,000 kids/day in 1968-1969, nationwide. Building on the success of the free breakfast program, the Panthers' Free Food Program established food pantries to support adults as well. Their commitment to nourishing the bodies and minds of their community members solidified their profound understanding that hunger is not just a physical condition but also a systemic injustice. The Panthers' initiatives transcended past food. They established free medical clinics staffed by volunteer doctors, nurses, and medical students, often housed in low-rent facilities donated by supportive community members. These clinics served as symbols of solidarity in neighborhoods underserved by traditional healthcare systems. Yet, the Panthers' impact extended beyond their direct services too. They leveraged their grassroots network to advocate for systemic change, rallying local businesses for donations and boycotting those who refused to participate in their effort to build community solidarity. Their efforts spoke volumes and represented the power of collective action. Though many aspects of their work were considered controversial in their time, today many recognize The Black Panther Party as powerful role models of community organization and activism that addressed systemic injustices like food insecurity long before many organizations like ours came into existence. Establishing relationships with schools, sports teams and the business sector, sharing our stories and introducing the Cheer Board to a whole new generation of Winnipeggers! Celebrating 105 years of giving this year, The Christmas Cheer Board of Winnipeg has been helping make the season a bit brighter by providing food and toy hampers to families in need across the city. It’s a labor of love for so many volunteers who dedicate their time helping out each season. In 2023, the Cheer Board saw its largest request for hampers to date with over 20,500 hamper applications.
