💡 The development and adoption of innovations have been the main driver of economic growth and other benefits for humans and the sustainability of the environment. However, smallholder farmers in Africa tend to adopt innovations much less intensively than those in other regions of the world, to the detriment of their situation, their societies and the environment. We're addressing the limited access to finance of agribusinesses and unlocking more value and support for smallholder farmers through the expansion of CASA: https://lnkd.in/dtRfSwcz In Sub-Saharan Africa alone, agribusinesses face a USD 74 bln financing gap, while also needing specialist support to develop strategies that bolster smallholder inclusion which can transform the global agricultural food system. The Commercial Agriculture for Smallholders and Agribusiness (CASA) is a program which increases investments in inclusive agribusiness models, with its first phase funded and managed by UK International Development and TechnoServe. For its second phase, CASA Plus, we're contributing USD 3 mln to its new expanded facility alongside the UK Government, with British International Investment contributing the same amount. CASA Plus will offer a range of technical assistance services, which aim to improve the development impact of existing agribusiness investments, support new investment opportunities, and create solutions to address barriers that stop investments in green and inclusive agribusiness models in low- and lower middle-income countries: all goals which exemplify our #marketcreation approach. At the AFS Forum 2024 this week in Kigali, Rwanda, I was honoured to represent Digital Agri Hub during the side-event "Climate Smart Agriculture; scaling Pathways" moderated by Nixon Gecheo, the senior digital officer at AGRA. As an outcome of the presentations and a panel discussion, the following three key takeaways emerged for the 'adoption' and 'fit-for-purpose' for the CSA scaling pathways: 1. Collaborative Efforts Are Essential to Streamline Investments in CSA: No single actor in the D4Ag space can drive the transformation of climate-smart agriculture alone. Programme-based investment plannings are required to boost sustainable partnerships. Sustainable partnerships are crucial to making a meaningful impact on food and nutrition security for small-scale farmers. Programme-based investments should focus on resource mobilization, fund management, programme design and coordination, and capacity building and development. 2. Policy Support is Critical for Success: Effective policy frameworks are needed to support the growth of climate-smart agriculture. These policies will enable successful partnerships and create a conducive environment for the sector to thrive. Out of 54 countries on the continent, only 15 countries currently have policy support for CSA. 3. Prioritize Trust and Inclusivity in Digital Solutions: For CSA-based digital solutions and services to be effective, they must build trust among farmers. This requires translating knowledge and information into local languages and contexts.
