Tactical Healthcare Expert | Bridging the Gap between Clinical and Security | Always Innovating to Reduce Workplace Violence | Security is not the absence of threat, but presence of connection.
Is Your De-escalation Program Doing More Harm Than Good? Are you still relying on outdated conflict resolution techniques like saying, “You seem really upset,” or “I am hearing you say…”? These phrases can place blame and, rather than defusing tension, may actually escalate it. Now more than ever, it’s crucial for patients to feel that your staff is truly on their side. 🤝 🔄 The Solution? Mirror their words—word for word—and use the power of silence. This method fosters understanding and connection, showing patients and visitors that your staff is there to support them. 🔗 Try Counterbalance: The art of using Tactical Empathy to guide patients towards a shared goal. It’s not just about calming a situation; it’s about working *with* the patient to meet their needs together. 💡 It takes practice, but mastering this technique is an essential professional nursing skill that can make all the difference. Is your team ready to elevate their de-escalation approach? Let’s train them to connect, not just communicate. #NursingSkills #ConflictResolution #TacticalEmpathy #PatientCare #ProfessionalDevelopment

A nice (THANK YOU!) 5-star review of BAD CALL from a Goodreads member 9/3/24: "I decided to read a chapter every night with my husband who is a EMT turned firefighter, and I am a nurse. Bad Call: A Summer Job on a New York Ambulance is a fascinating and gritty memoir that captures the raw reality of working on the front lines of emergency medical services in New York City. Even though it chronicles experiences from nearly 60 years ago, the book remains surprisingly relatable for anyone in the field today. The author does an excellent job balancing humor and gore, making it an engaging read that never feels too heavy despite the serious subject matter. Each chapter stands alone as its own individual short story, offering a snapshot of the various encounters and emergencies faced by the author. This structure keeps the narrative fresh and allows readers to dip in and out of the book without losing the thread. The writing is sharp and vivid, pulling you into the chaotic world of ambulance work with stories that are as hilarious as they are horrifying. The blend of humor helps to lighten the intense moments, making the book a compelling and authentic depiction of life in EMS. What makes Bad Call stand out is its timelessness. The challenges, the adrenaline rush, and the dark humor that come with the job resonate just as much now as they would have back then. It's a testament to how little the core of emergency work has changed, even as the world around it has evolved. If you're in the medical field or just enjoy a well-told story that doesn't shy away from the gritty details, Bad Call is a must-read. It's a brilliant combination of wit, wisdom, and raw experience that will leave a lasting impression."

Big hearts change lives! 💡👩⚕️🚀 What truly sets apart an exemplary care assistant? It's not just about qualifications or ticking off tasks. It's the person who puts in that extra bit of compassion, the one who sees the individual behind the care plan. 1️⃣ Listening Ears 🗣️ Active listening is gold in healthcare. By really hearing what our elders or those in need say, care assistants can tailor their support, promoting dignity and independence. 2️⃣ Quick-thinking Minds 🧠 The best care assistants can think on their feet. Anticipating needs, understanding subtle signals and responding swiftly can be the difference in providing top-notch care. 3️⃣ Endless Patience ⏳ Patience isn't just a virtue; it's a necessity. We all have our moments, and a care assistant who can navigate these with a calm demeanor is invaluable. At Newton Healthcare, we see these qualities shine every day. Our teams embody honesty, courage, and inclusion, making a difference because they care. #CareAssistant #HealthcareHeroes #NewtonHealthcare

I was heartened to learn that the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services launched a national inter-agency effort to improve quality in health care systems post-pandemic. Part of this effort, lead by U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs's Veteran's Health Administration, is to transform health care organizations into high reliability organizations that demonstrate: 1. Leadership commitment 2. Safety culture 3. Continuous improvement This is great news for everyone who interacts with the healthcare system because we will all be safer as a result. Except for those who live or work in the one segment they skipped: nursing and residential care facilities. These types of facilities have a lot in common with hospitals, clinics, primary and specialty care. They are operationally complex, suffer from staffing shortages and constant turnover, and experience adverse events such as falls with injury, medication errors, and worker injuries. In order to truly improve quality across the healthcare system, long term care organizations must be a part of the discussion. They need to receive the same national attention as their counterparts. My team created #TheLiveWellMethod to bring high reliability organization concepts to the people working on the ground in long term care facilities. We worked closely with NHS Institute for Innovation and Improvement, Oregon Department of Human Services and others to develop, pilot, and now provide a comprehensive way for leaders and staff to implement the core practices of leadership, safety, and continuous improvement every day, every shift. In a way that is empowering to staff, residents, family members, and vendors. When you interact with the healthcare system, do you assume the organization will have excellent leadership, safety, and continuous improvement? If you'd like to know what care professionals who work in highly reliable organizations do every day, try our scorecard. https://lnkd.in/gHXFA4av #CMS #CDC, #AHRQ, #VAH #qualityimprovement #CMSNationalQualityStrategy #highqualitycare
