Thoroughly enjoyed this panel discussion with such an outstanding set of speakers. My main takeaway is that whatever the target number is in terms of installed electrolysers capacity in the US we operate with in 2030 timeframe (80-100GW) the OEMs can get us there. Yes, there are short-term headwinds to overcome in order to ensure resiliency of this industry and ensure that plans become reality. And yes, we need to ensure the reliability of products with many newcomers in the industry. However, we already see GW-scale plants on the ground and reputable companies with the credible plans driving scale-up of the manufacturing in the U.S. Even among 4 companies that participated in this webinar the manufacturing plans could add up to 80GW number of electrolyzer production in the next 7 years. Exciting news today from HFTO’s Annual Merit Review with Alejandro Moreno from the Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE), U.S. Department of Energy announcing our Multi-Year Program Plan! The MYPP is our strategic planning document to help guide clean #hydrogen innovation and research in the coming years. This plan includes multiple important targets: clean H2 production of $2/kg by 2026, electrolyzer system costs of $250/kW (low-temp) and $500/kW (high-temp) by 2026, H2 fueling cost for HD vehicles of $7/kg by 2028, and fuel cell system costs for HD transportation of $80/kW by 2030. A big shout out to Eric Miller, Nichole Fitzgerald, Joseph Stanford, all the PMs, and the rest of the HFTO team for the countless hours they contributed to ensure the MYPP provides detailed activities aligned with the National Clean Hydrogen Strategy to guide the clean hydrogen community to meet these goals. I completely agree with the challenges listed in the report. These challenges can be grouped into the following three categories: 1) Reducing cost and improving performance; 2) De-risking and scaling up technologies across the value chain; and 3) Barriers to large-scale adoption. Barriers #2 and #3 are often unfamiliar to many industry teams and academic institutions. Establishing Field Test Labs for scale analysis of fuel cell and hydrogen systems is necessary to solve the challenges and better understand the areas of focus for reducing costs and improving performance (#1).
