Today is World Cancer Day. Being the granddaughter of late Börje Larsson, professor of Physical and Radiation Biology and the inventor and mastermind behind the #gammaknife and the Positron emission tomography (PET) technique, I know that science matters and that great research progress has been made in the last decades when it comes to cancer treatment. But the fact is still that nearly one child a day is diagnosed with cancer in Sweden and is one of the leading causes of death among our children. But I’m not only the granddaughter of a man who devoted his life to science to make sure we find treatment for cancer, I’m also the wife of Peter who luckily survived deadly cancer thanks to science. Me and Peter have two wonderful daughters and our biggest wish is to see them grow up healthy and to see them have children of their own one day. Whatever we can do, big or small, to support and make tomorrow better today – let’s do it! I’m proud to work for Siemens Energy that has decided to give all profit from circular IT in Sweden to Swedish Childhood Cancer Fund (Barncancerfonden) to financially support the development of new treatment methods and continuing education in the field of childhood cancer. And can you imagine, last year Siemens Energy in Sweden’s circular IT activities in collaboration with Inrego generated 50.000 EUR to science! That's not peanuts. It is #sustainability in multiple dimensions. A big thanks to Christina Skoglund with team that make this happen and congratulations to the nomination to “Best sustainability action 2023 award” by Miljö & Utveckling !

Ivana Domljanovic, a postdoc researcher at the University of Fribourg in Switzerland has discovered a blood test capable of detecting breast cancer. While traditional mammography identifies tissues that are already affected, this new and less invasive method will make possible to detect the body’s immune response to breast cancer, allowing early diagnosis and treatment. When you experience, that your vision is truly becoming part of a global strategy… A few days ago, the World Health Organization officially launched the #SPECS2030 Initiative with its 31 founding members: to actively work towards the goal that everyone in this world who needs a refractive error intervention has access to quality, affordable and people-centred refractive error services.   This is Martin Aufmuth, inventor of the EinDollarBrille, known as GoodVision Glasses, sitting in Geneva during the preparations of the meeting. The event opened with remarks from WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, a meaningful moment.   I joined Martin’s life project at the end of last year. When I see him on this picture (thank you Antje) in his humble way, I feel very proud and happy for him.   Martin’s understanding of the vicious link between vision impairment and poverty goes back to his student days. He initially became a math and physics teacher, but his intrinsic motivation to actively find a simple and impactful solution to empower people, was stronger.   12 years ago he founded the non-profit organisation EinDollarBrille e.V. in Germany. Today, EinDollarBrille is part of the GoodVision association with the organisations in 11 programme countries and 2 other supporting organisations, GoodVision USA and EinDollarBrille Schweiz. The launch of SPECS is an important milestone for all of those who are helping to give this cause global attention and urging for action. The founding members are the driving force in raising awareness and advocating for change. They are setting global standards and forging a strong alliance to realize the goal to provide people with permanent access to quality eye-care in the weak economic areas on this planet. The target is set at 40% of about 1 billion people who can’t afford glasses or have no possibilities to obtain eye-care.   I am amazed by all the dedicated experts and organisations GoodVision is partnering with such as the International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness (IAPB) and The Coalition for Clear Vision. 🗓️ On 20th February 2024, Dr Dhaval Trivedi, AI-PROGNOSIS project partner from King's College London, represented the AI-PROGNOSIS project at the 𝐂𝐑𝐈𝐒𝐏 - 𝐄𝐔𝐑𝐎𝐏𝐀𝐑 𝐏𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐆𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐩 𝐌𝐞𝐞𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠, along with valuable insights and updates on the project. 🌍𝐂𝐑𝐈𝐒𝐏 (𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐜𝐡 𝐈𝐧𝐯𝐨𝐥𝐯𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐒𝐮𝐩𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭 𝐛𝐲 𝐏𝐰𝐏𝐬) is the EUROPAR expert patient group formed to promote public and patient involvement. The purpose of CRISP is to raise awareness of research, highlight the importance of participation of people (specifically with #Parkinson’s) in clinical research, and encourage patients and their carers to ask about clinical research when with their consultant. 𝐄𝐔𝐑𝐎𝐏𝐀𝐑 is a non-profit multi-disciplinary organisation of key opinion leaders across Europe dedicated to improving care for people with Parkinson’s and delivering excellence in clinical research. In order to empower people with #Parkinson’s and hear their voices in relation to research in line with INVOLVE, EUROPAR has led to the formation of CRISP. We should expect nothing less than breakthrough results for investments – including philanthropic investments – when solving for the global challenges of climate, education, and health, said Dr. Regina Dugan at the #PhilanthropyAsiaSummit (PAS).   She shared how the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency’s (DARPA) model – with its daring approach and focus on impact – has formed Wellcome Leap’s playbook for bold, impactful investments, tackling global challenges like health, education, and climate change. DARPA has yielded radical breakthroughs for over six decades, including pivotal advancements that enabled the development of the mRNA vaccine.   Today, Wellcome Leap leverages similar interdisciplinary, rapid-action networks to launch transformative programmes in 28 countries. This includes scaling the production of mRNA vaccines, bioengineering organs to save lives and reduce dialysis costs, and improving children’s cognitive development before age three. Dr. Dugan spoke on the first day of #PAS2024, during the Perspectives segment as well as the plenary session on transforming health and education through philanthropy.
