In conversations with several visionary leaders this week, a recurring theme emerged: the pressing need to reboot our efforts toward building more equitable organizations. It's a journey that intersects the unique worlds of business, non-profits, and government. As someone deeply passionate about resourcing Towns, Chambers, and Industry Associations, I am starting to witness the incredible power these entities wield. They are not just facilitators of commerce but the architects of ecosystems that shape how resources are distributed, especially to leaders facing the relentless challenges of our times. Less than half a percent of all philanthropic funding goes to Native American causes, and only a fraction of that reaches Native-controlled organizations. Native leaders are sounding the alarm and demanding change in a powerful new anthology called “Invisible No More: Voices from Native America.” “Invisible No More” features stories from diverse Native nations, shedding light on the ongoing struggle for justice, the historic and current impact of genocide and settler colonialism, and the theft of Native land and resources that facilitates the racialized consolidation of wealth in philanthropy and beyond. Join “Invisible No More” essayists Michael Roberts, president and CEO of First Nations Development Institute; Trisha Kehaulani Watson-Sproat, owner of Honua Consulting; and Heather Fleming, executive director of Change Labs, in conversation with Carmen Rojas, PhD (she/her), president and CEO of Marguerite Casey Foundation, for a timely look at how lessons from Native community building can redress historic and ongoing inequities, create just societies, and cultivate a better world.
