Do you know about our massive septic-to-sewer conversion work in Australia’s Mornington Peninsula? With 114 miles / 183.5 kilometers of difficult, sandy terrain and undulating plains, the Mornington Peninsula coastline experiences a huge increase in the population from summer tourism. Strained or failing septic tanks caused leaching, odors, and contamination of groundwater. Gravity sewer and pressure sewer systems were considered for this project. After evaluating both approaches, pressure sewers were deemed both the most feasible and cost-effective solution, saving ~$120 million on the project compared to gravity. A finalist in Australia’s 2014 Premier Sustainability Awards, the program cited the project for its, “integration of a novel approach to design, new technology and trenchless drilling (which) has allowed the corporation to apply a modern solution to address age-old issues." With water resources in the spotlight, here are James Parker's and my thoughts on the recent designation of the NPS for water resource infrastructure.

[RESOURCE MANAGEMENT] Rhode Island: preserving the water 💧 of Narragansett Bay, a real environmental challenge to which Bouygues Travaux Publics teams are responding. Rhode Island, on the east coast of the United States, is one-third water. To help improve water management in the bay, which has long been plagued by pollution problems, Bouygues Travaux Publics, as part of the CB3A consortium, is building a 3.5-kilometre-long storage tunnel as part of the stormwater, wastewater and industrial water collection system. This water will then be taken care of in a treatment plant, before being discharged into the Seekonk river. ➡ This structure is part of the 3rd phase of the programme launched 20 years ago by the Narragansett Bay Commission, which aims to modernise the management of this precious resource. The theme for this year’s #LocalGovernmentAwarenessWeek is Infrastructure! While some look behind the curtain, we're looking beneath the tweed curtain to highlight projects in Oak Bay. The Uplands Sewer Separation project has begun, with phase one (Humber Catchment) underway. Did you know: 2️⃣ The existing combined collection system is comprised of two main catchment areas, Humber (Phase 1) and Rutland (Phase 2). 🌊 This work of separating the sanitary sewer and storm water systems will help provide mitigation against the risk of sewage overflow into the ocean and reduce strain on CRD facilities downstream. 📝 This project is one of Oak Bay’s major infrastructure commitments under the regional Core Area Liquid Waste Management Plan (CALWMP). Did you see some of the recent headlines, in the Sunday Times and elsewhere, about London’s “Cathedral of 💩“ being ready for business? This really is a huge feat of engineering. Now that the gigantic ‘lid’ is in place (weighing 1,200 tonnes and 24 metres in diameter), sewerage can start pouring in here … 1.6 million tonnes of it!! No less than 15 miles long, and having taken 8 years to build, this really is one sewer to rule them all! The ‘super sewer’ is “designed to dramatically reduce sewage pollution in the central London River Thames. In a typical year, tens of millions of tons of storm sewage spill into the River Thames but, once fully operational in 2025, the new infrastructure will reduce those spills almost completely. The Super Sewer is being constructed by a joint venture of Costain Upstream Ltd, Bachy Soletanche and VINCI working for Tideway, the company building the super sewer for Thames Water.” Wouldn’t it be fantastic if we could have real-time monitoring of water quality in our rivers? That’s something CSignum and partners can do. For the film shooting #powerofvalves I spent some time with people that deal with everyday water management such as local managers, valve operators and consumers. These interactions brought up two important aspects to me that I want to share. Hopefully this triggers your interest to know more about our water reality and something to think about 💦 1. #Derisking the #watersector doesn't need to be only through large investments and large scale interventions, it can be small and incremental. This is especially relevant for small municipalities. Being surrounded by seawater pose challenges and opportunities. So far we have been working towards expanding seawater desalination plant capacity in different islands around the country. Also, seemingly important, Cabo Verde started soon after privatisation decade reforming water utilities to address structural institutional, financial and management problems. However, in a #municipality #level the water topic/issue ( water infrastructure, water access, daily operation and maintenance are far more challenging to address after the reform in following commercial principles. As for example, my visit to Santa Cruz Municipality at the #Cancelo area, addressing #water_for_all, #water_security seems to be far more important and complex to solve. We need #investors, small projects in the sector at small scale. These initiatives can be incremental and can have cumulative impact over time. The idea that investing in the "urban poor" area is financially risky, because they don't pay is far more biased than real. Actually, those are the ones saving money for the water bills as top priority. 2. Investing in collaborative #research and #development In the water field could be something that would bring empirical views, lessons, solutions from local managers, local people to policymakers. Giving special attention to research and local collaboration we are speeding the pace to solve local water problems that is crucial to our development.
