Cleaning up road dust in spring should be as elementary as clearing snow from roads in winter! CEO of SAMI Machinery, Villu Valm wrote an article in Estonia's major daily newspaper Eesti Päevaleht on how to effectively tackle road dust in spring. The article itself is in Estonian, we have highlighted some key points Villu made. During winter, a significant amount of dirt accumulates on the snow, which transforms into road dust as the snow melts. This dust, composed of various particles such as tyre studs scuffing the asphalt, car brakes, tyre wear, dust from construction work, and spread sand, poses a serious issue. To effectively control this road dust, using the proper cleaning techniques and technology is crucial, such as replacing sand with granite grit for de-icing and advising drivers to switch from winter studded tyres to summer tyres. 🍃 Last week, we kicked off the new year with an insightful online #seminar about "Green Asphalt" tailored for real estate developers. In #Estonia, we've been introducing #LIGNOVA lignin as a potential material to replace bitumen in road construction, primarily in the public sector. However, private sector developers also have a significant opportunity to take the lead in embracing innovation. 🔔 For instance, last year, one of #Estonia's largest shopping and leisure centers, Ülemiste Center 🛒 , piloted parking lots where Fibenol lignin partially replaced bitumen. To support this practice, we collaborated with Karli Kontson, a scientist from TalTech – Tallinn University of Technology, who has been helping to develop a technical manual📜. This manual aims to assist road and parking lot installers in smoothly transitioning from #bitumen to #lignin. 📽 To share this information, we organized a seminar where we covered various aspects of lignin's #potential as a bitumen replacement. Over the past year, Pablo Rodriguez and I dedicated our efforts to our thesis, titled "Distrito Hídrico Azteca." In anticipation of the #FIFA World Cup 2026, to be held across #Mexico, the USA, and Canada, our project focuses on revitalizing the area around Estadio Azteca to host this significant event. Beyond serving as a venue for the World Cup, we view this occasion as an excellent opportunity for Mexico to showcase its rich history, cultural diversity, and innovative spirit. Moreover, we believe it's a crucial moment to demonstrate Mexico City's #urbanresilience. With the city projected to reach #dayzero in 2028, Pablo and I delved into the study of subsidence, stormwater-induced flooding, and the pressing issue of water scarcity. Our project is designed to address these challenges by implementing systems to collect, treat, and reuse rainwater and waste water. While the project presented its share of challenges, it allowed us to deepen our understanding of the city's history and the contemporary issues it faces, with a particular emphasis on #urbanplanning and resilience. Happy and proud to have been able to contribute to the Green European Horizons Academy's conference: "How Can it be Good for All?" Albeit short, for me that was an amazing experience, which really allowed me to link my academic studies with pressing contemporary issues. I am optimistically looking forward to more and more opportunities like this one. The conference itself focused predominantly on the problems of extractivism and its future in a world that is determined to undergo a just green transition. I was able to draw on my recent research on neo-extractivism in Bolivia to show that even contemporary re-evaluations of extractivism are guilty of the same problems as their "original sin". Namely, they sustain intra- and international systems of oppression and inequality, contribute to the marginalisation of indigenous communities and empower authocratic regimes of surplus capture, resource distribution and environmental degradation. As discussed in the conference, it is thus of crucial importance to critically examine extractivism in order to pave the way towards a just, ecologically tolerant (and probably post-extractivist) future. I highly recommend visitting the website of the conference and diving a bit deeper in the topic at Polekol - Kako da bude "Dobro za sve?" (it has versions both in Serbian and English). These are important questions for environmental and non-environmental professionals alike.
