This decline threatens critical benefits—such as clean water, food security, and climate resilience. 🌍💧 World Wetlands Day is around the corner! 💧🌍 Wetlands are among the most valuable yet threatened #ecosystems on our planet. Their role is crucial: 💧 Natural water filters – They improve water quality by trapping pollutants. 🌱 Carbon sinks – Storing CO₂ and helping fight climate change. 🐸 Biodiversity hotspots – Supporting countless species, from birds to amphibians. 🌊 Flood protection – Acting as buffers against extreme weather. 🚨 However, #wetlands are disappearing at an alarming rate! Since 1970, Europe has lost a significant portion of its wetlands due to urbanization, pollution, unsustainable agriculture, and climate change. We cannot afford to lose these vital ecosystems! 💡 What can we do? At ETC-UMA, we are committed to protecting and restoring wetlands through two key initiatives: 🔹 Wetland4Change (Interreg Euro-MED Programme) – Enhancing the #resilience of Mediterranean wetlands to climate change through remote-sensing and GIS knowledge, monitoring, data-driven strategies, and stakeholder engagement. 🔹 RESTORE4Cs (CINEA - European Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency) – Evaluating the impact of wetland restoration on climate mitigation, #biodiversity, and ecosystem services, leading on the wetland mapping and assessment to support policymakers and communities. 📢 Join the conversation and help us raise awareness! Nature’s shield is disappearing fast. ⚠️ Coastal ecosystems are collapsing under human pressure. The loss of mangroves is pushing us closer to climate disaster. They quietly thrive along coastlines, serving as powerful shields and carbon sinks. Mangroves can store up to 4X more carbon than tropical rainforests, trapping it for centuries. But these vital ecosystems are vanishing, FAST. So, who’s behind this destruction? ▫️ Pollution. ▫️ Deforestation for farming. ▫️ Rapid coastal development. ▫️ Harsh effects of climate change. And the worst part? We’re really running out of time. Buth there is hope if : 1- Governments enforce stronger laws to stop illegal logging and harmful development. 2-Local communities are empowered to lead conservation efforts.
