Yesterday marked a pivotal moment for sustainable development in the EU as the Council officially adopts the new Ecodesign and Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR)! ✅ This progressive regulation replaces the existing ecodesign directive and expands its scope to cover a wide range of products, emphasizing sustainability and ecodesign aspects. Here are some key takeaways for companies that design products: 🔍Broad Scope: The ESPR now includes a diverse array of products beyond just energy-related ones. This expansion emphasizes sustainability through criteria such as durability, CO2 footprint, and recycled material content. 🔆New Sustainability & Ecodesign Approach: Companies must now incorporate performance requirements, environmental footprint considerations, resource efficiency, and manage substances of concern in their product designs. ✏️Ecodesign Requirements: Compliance with ecodesign requirements is crucial. These focus on energy and water use efficiency, waste generation, resource efficiency, durability, reusability, reparability, and recyclability. 📱Digital Product Passport: The introduction of a Digital Product Passport will enhance transparency and traceability throughout the product lifecycle, including essential product information and labels. 📑Market Surveillance: There's an increased focus on market surveillance and customs controls to ensure compliance. Companies must adhere to set standards and regulations to avoid penalties. ✳️Green Public Procurement (GPP): Companies should be aware of mandatory GPP criteria for contracting authorities, including preventing the destruction of unsold consumer goods and meeting transparency requirements for discarding such goods. Reflecting on the achievements of the current Ecodesign Directive 2009/125/EC, which saved €120 billion in energy costs and reduced annual energy consumption by 10%, we are optimistic about the far-reaching benefits of this new extended regulation. By aligning with these key aspects of the ESPR to the product development processess, companies can promote circularity, ensure compliance, and stay ahead in the evolving European market. The #EUGreenDeal and all the directives that are about to be applicable are going to accelarate EU ecological transition. I am critical on some aspects but also super positive for others ! The EU Ecodesign directive #ESPR aims to accelerate the reparability of products, in particular garments. And there are very good reasons for that: "According to a recent Eurobarometer, 77% of Europeans feel a personal responsibility to act to limit climate change. Defective products are often discarded prematurely, instead of being repaired, resulting in 35 million tons of waste, 30 million tons of resources and 261 million tons of greenhouse gas emissions in the EU each year. Opting for replacement instead of repair is estimated to cost consumers 12 billion each year." It is essential to design garments to be repairable and incentivize repair services for garments. There are several projects under study in France, such as a tax policy to support repair services. The #French #AGEClaw is also pushing for it, providing incentives to consumers, granting the reparation of garments via the funds collected by Refashion and the support of ADEME. 📢 Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (#ESPR): a provisional agreement has been reached this week between Parliament and Council. The new law will build on the existing Ecodesign Directive and will allow to progressively set performance and information requirements for key products placed on the EU market. ♻ Priority will be given to a number of products, including #furniture (and mattresses). After the ESPR enters into force, the first working plan will be adopted, which will establish which products would be targeted. Product specific legislation will then be laid down in delegated acts. ➡ EFIC looks forward to contributing to the next stages and providing sector-specific expertise, with the goal of making #sustainable products the norm. The EU Parliament is making significant strides towards the adoption of the Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation. On May 22, 2024, the European Commission hosted an informative online session that shed light on the crucial dates, timelines, and key focus areas. Special thanks to the insightful speakers Matjaž Malgaj, Paola Zanetti, Anna S. EU regulation changes are aiming to a market full of more sustainable products. 📝 On the 18th of July, steps were taken for the introduction of the Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR). This is an expansion on the Ecodesign Directive by broadening its reach to a wider range of products, while also enforcing stricter ecodesign standards in manufacturing. 2️⃣ Things to take note of: 1. Last week the Council, gathering ministers from EU national governments, adopted the new Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR) as expected, with a qualified majority. Only Italy abstained. Surprisingly however, the application of ESPR has been deferred by 24 months after the entry into force (expected in the coming weeks), i.e. to ca. mid-2026. Presumably this delay takes account of the challenges for the European Commission to define implementing measures and first delegated acts to operationalise ESPR within the strict timelines foreseen in the Regulation, especially for certain textiles and the new EU Digital Product Passport. The deferred application may be good news in terms of allowing more time to develop fit-for-purpose and meaningful requirements to enhance the environmental sustainability and related information for products placed on the EU market, in close interaction with stakeholders. On the other hand, it somewhat reduces the ambition in time to push for transformative changes. 💡 Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation 🌏 On December 5, 2023, the Council and European Parliament agreed on a regulation to set ecodesign requirements for sustainable products. This new directive, which replaces Directive 2009/125/EC, aims to extend the life of the products concerned and make better use of resources.   👇 Key information 👇 - The new Ecodesign requirements will go beyond energy efficiency (durability, reusability, reparability, recycled content, carbon footprint, environmental impact, use of energy and resources, presence of chemical substances)    - It will improve the level playing field for sustainable products on the EU's internal market and strengthen the global competitiveness of businesses offering sustainable products.   - Measures to end the wasteful and environmentally harmful practice of destroying unsold consumer products.   - “Digital Product Passport” which will help consumers and businesses make more sustainable product choices.   📅 What’s next ?   The European Parliament and the Council will now have to formally adopt the new Regulation. The European Commission will propose a first work plan focusing on iron, steel, aluminium, textiles, furniture, tires, detergents, paints, lubricants, chemicals and electronics.
