🧵 Global fibre production has more than doubled since 2000! 😱 The EU itself generates between 12 and 16 kg of #textile waste per person every year, much of which is exported, posing significant #environmental and social challenges. The EU textiles sector is marked with overproduction, misleading #greenwashing practices and pervasive marketing tactics... it's time for bold action! 📣🌱🌍   Although the 2022 EU Strategy for Sustainable and Circular Textiles marked a significant step toward greater accountability in the sector, it fell short on ambition. The EU has laws to protect water and air, but not soil...😟 Yet soil degradation threatens food security, carbon cycles and water quality, costing the EU at least 97 billion euros each year😰 But this could soon change! European Parliament and the Council are currently negotiating the first EU law dedicated to soil, but the proposal needs some work if it hopes to truly protect soil health in Europe. Healthy soils are the foundation of life. NEW: LFP batteries have been gaining momentum in the electric car market, and there's no reason they should escape the EU's battery recycling targets. 🔋 That's the message of the recycling industry and NGOs in a letter to the EU Commission. They say a draft Delegated Act risks omitting mandatory recycling for LFP, creating an uneven playing field between battery chemistries. 👎 That could result in large amounts of landfill waste, undermining the environmental ambition of the Batteries Regulation. This would fail to implement the primary law’s 65% recycling efficiency target and lead to an environmentally sub-optimal treatment of LFP batteries on the EU market. ♻️ They call on the Commission to close this loophole by ensuring that phosphorus and iron are included in the mandatory calculation of recycling efficiency. We talk about... ⚡ electric instead of petrol cards. 🔥 Heat pumps instead of gas boilers. 🚂 Trains instead of planes. So, why aren't we talking about low-carbon cement instead of highly-polluting traditional cement? Change in the cement industry doesn’t have to be a far-off pipe dream — it could happen today. 🥝 Biodiversity is essential for #ecosystem functions, which provide goods and services for our needs.
