🌍 It is Day 2 at #INC-4 in #Ottawa where negotiations towards a global instrument to end plastic pollution are currently ongoing. As we look towards a global instrument to beat plastic pollution, it is crucial to recognize the unique challenges faced by respective countries in different regions of the world. We are making significant strides in reducing carbon emissions through our PET plastic recycling efforts! From January to May, we collected and recycled: 📊 January: 70,484 kgs 📊 February: 114,037 kgs 📊 March: 140,465 kgs 📊 April: 153,853 kgs 📊 May: 133,607 kgs This translates to a total of over 612,446 kgs of PET plastic waste collected in that period, preventing approximately 1,200 tons of CO₂ emissions from entering the atmosphere, this reduction show the positive impact that our company has on the environment. Africa is facing a severe plastic pollution crisis, endangering both ecosystems and human health. Though the continent accounts for just 5% of global plastic production, rapid urbanization and population growth are driving an increase in single-use plastic waste. In Kenya, plastics make up 12% of solid waste—about 966,000 tonnes annually—and even Rwanda struggles despite its plastic bans. The East Africa SUP Bill proposes harmonized legislation and a ban on unnecessary plastics. Strengthening and streamlining national and regional waste management regulatory frameworks is essential to tackle the growing challenge of single-use plastic pollution effectively. I'm glad to facilitate the workshop centred on presenting an analytical report of Legal documents on Plastic Waste and Plastic Waste Management in Tanzania with a global view and engage participants to share experience and document recommendations to #sustainable plastic waste management. ________ Background Information for @wated and @gaia project titled: Analysis of Legal Instruments on Plastic Waste and Plastic Waste Management to feed in UN Legal Binding Treaty on Plastic. 1.The historic resolution, titled “End Plastic Pollution: Towards an internationally legally binding instrument” was adopted with the conclusion of the three-day UNEA-5.2 meeting. 2. On 02 March 2022 in Nairobi– Heads of State, Ministers of environment and other representatives from UN Member States endorsed a historic resolution at the UN Environment Assembly (UNEA-5) in Nairobi to End Plastic Pollution and forge an international legally binding agreement by 2024. Here we're! 3.The resolution, based on three initial draft resolutions from various nations, establishes an Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee (INC), which began its work in 2022, with the ambition of completing a draft global legally binding agreement by the end of 2024. It is expected to present a legally binding instrument, which would reflect diverse alternatives to address the full lifecycle of plastics,including its production, the design of reusable and recyclable products and materials, and disposal. Also, expressed the need for enhanced international collaboration to facilitate access to technology, capacity building and scientific and technical cooperation. Read more @unep

Kenya Joins Global Coalition to End Plastic Pollution! Kenya’s leadership in environmental sustainability reaches new heights with its decision to join the High Ambition Coalition to End Plastic Pollution. This move is perfectly aligned with East Africa legislative efforts to support the ALN Kenya | Anjarwalla & Khanna and The FlipFlopi Project SUP Draft Bill, advocating for the reduction of un necessary single-use plastics and promoting recycling and sustainable alternatives. To truly tackle plastic waste in Africa, harmonization of plastic regulations across the continent is essential. Synchronized legislation, such as the ALN SUP Draft Bill, can streamline efforts, making regional collaborations more effective and reinforcing Africa's leadership in circular economy initiatives. A harmonized legal framework would also boost industrialization, entrepreneurship, and innovation in East Africa. Consistent policies would encourage businesses to invest in green technologies, recycling industries, and alternative materials, creating opportunities for eco-friendly products and sustainable packaging. Harmonization would also reduce market fragmentation, enabling businesses to scale across borders and tap into regional trade networks. 🌍 Taking action on Earth Day! 🌱 Africa joins the global movement against plastic pollution with the theme 'Planet vs Plastics,' highlighting the urgent need to protect our environment. From grassroots efforts like Sustainable Vibes in Nigeria cleaning up streets to innovative initiatives like Twende Green Ecocycle in Kenya turning plastic waste into school furniture, communities are making a difference. In Uganda, the government is stepping up with measures to combat single-use plastics, aligning with the nation's commitment to sustainability. Meanwhile, in Ghana, the Church of Pentecost sees plastic waste management not just as an environmental issue but also as an opportunity for employment and income generation. While progress is being made, challenges persist, with some countries struggling with plastic waste management. Yet, amidst these challenges, stories like Isatou Ceesay's in The Gambia inspire hope.
